March 28, 1947

• William Richard Barton returned home Thursday of last week from New Jersey and New York after completion of a two-weeks’ naval reserve training cruise on board the Battleship Wisconsin. The cruise went through the Caribbean Sea to the Panama Canal Zone and on the return voyage they passed through a special training area near Quantanamo, Cuba. While in the northeast, he attended church services in the beautiful cadet chapel at West Point and enjoyed hearing the cadet choir of 170 voices. He appeared on the “Give and Take” program and matched wits with John Reed King, receiving a Westinghouse hand vacuum cleaner and a set of three North Star wool blankets.

• Glenn E. McDonald has sold the Kelley hardware, plumbing and heating stock and business to George L. DeLong & Son of Mound City, who will move to Fairfax about April 1 to take over the business.

• Elbert R. Tilton, Fairfax, died unexpectedly at the age of 34 years, 4 months, and 22 days at the veteran’s hospital at Wadsworth, Kansas, March 22. He was taken to the hospital March 11 for treatment for an ailment he is thought to have contracted while serving his country in the islands of the Southwest Pacific.

March 30, 1972

• In spite of threatening skies early Friday morning, March 24, friends and neighbors of Charles Scarlett drove an army of tractors (22) to his fields near Sharp’s Grove Church and by the end of the day some 285 acres had been disked and plowed. In the afternoon, during a 45 minute period, a 40-acre field was plowed. Charles has been a patient at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, since March 18, where he is undergoing treatment. At the noon hour, a ham and chicken dinner was prepared and served in the Sam Gaffney basement. Charles Moore of the Moore Bros. Oil Co. donated the fuel for the tractors. “Spoofy” Watkins helped service the tractors during lunchtime.

• Something new in the realm of entertainment for area citizens and competition for youths is being formulated by the Kiwanians of Fairfax in the form of a bicycle rodeo. The event will be held April 8 in the city park.

March 27, 1997

• The sixth grade class has been playing chess. The class has had one chess tournament and the first place winner was Michael Oswald. Michael has a record of 3-0, but Jessica Ritchie and A.J. Harding are in the chase with 2-1. Bryan Adams has a record of 3-2 and has played the most games of anybody in the tournament.

• The Fairfax R-3 School District has hooked up to the internet. Mr. Fine conducted an assembly on the proper way to use it.

• Gene Bradfield single-handedly swept the sidewalk and street parking area last Thursday on the south side of Main Street from Kincannons’ to the Fairfax Market.

• Joyce Springer received special honors and a gold bracelet as a retirement gift at an awards ceremony and dinner. She has been an employee of Dr. James K. Hunter, Jr. for 17 years and the past two for Community Hospital, Fairfax. Hospital administrator Larry Goodloe bestowed the honor of “Employee of the Year” upon Mrs. Springer with gifts of a beautiful clock, $200 in cash, and a special parking place which she gave back to the hospital to be auctioned off.
