• Mrs. Floyd Parr and Miss Leta Vette have purchased Nora’s Beauty Shop from Mrs. E.R. Sonnenberg, who expects for the present to spend her time at her home. The new firm name is Modern Beauty Shop.

• A heavier than usual vote was drawn Tuesday in the school and city elections which put in office Virgil Harbison and Lyle A. Rolofson as school directors, Forrest Browning as alderman from the South Ward, and Clarence Kirkendoll as alderman from the North Ward.

April 6, 1972

• Navy Fireman Apprentice Everett H. Davison, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett H. Davison, Sr., of Clearmont, Missouri, sailed to Norkolk, Virginia, on March 16 after six months in the Mediterranean and North Atlantic aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence. He and his shipmates journeyed more than 37,000 miles aboard the carrier.

• Some stores will remain open for business until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday nights for shipping convenience, according to Jerry Hill of the Tarkio Chamber of Commerce Merchants Committee.

• Warren Dean Rolofson has been employed to teach elementary and junior high physical education at the Tarkio R-I Schools next year. He will also be coaching girls’ basketball and supervising the junior high athletic program.

• Atchison County’s new conservation agent, Richard Sperber, 25, of St. Charles, Missouri, will begin his duties after completing training April 20. He was an Airman Apprentice with the Navy Medics and served with the Marines in Vietnam for nine months. His law enforcement experience includes two years as a police officer in St. Louis.

April 3, 1997

• What started as burning grass during yard work resulted in the loss of a home. The Tarkio Volunteer Fire Department got the call of a yard fire at approximately 5:30 p.m. Easter Sunday, March 30, at the residence of Jason Brown, located west of Tarkio on Highway 136. Sparks from the burning grass caught the home on fire and it was burned to the ground.

• Dirt work at the new Avalanche and Avalanche Screen Printing building at Sixth and Main streets in Tarkio recently got underway. The Tarkio Avalanche has been published in the same location since its inception on August 30, 1884. Now, some 112 years later, it has outgrown its current building with the need to expand.

• A whole hog benefit dinner will be held at the Tarkio American Legion Building Sunday, April 6, for 12-year-old Josh Smith of Tarkio. Smith, the son of Brian and Loria Smith, is recovering from severe burns suffered in a recent accident.

• The Generals’ Executive Club from Tarkio Academy hosted an Easter egg hunt for Tarkio Elementary kindergarten students. The youngsters searched high and low, even in bushes, for the eggs.

• Senator John Ashcroft hosted a round table discussion on juvenile crime and criminal justice at Tarkio City Hall Monday, March 31, 1997. Approximately 16 people attended the round table, including Tarkio Mayor Vilas Jones, Senator Sam Graves, Tarkio Academy Executive Director Rob Dowis, Tarkio Police Chief Mick McAdams, Judge Kay Graves Rosenbohm, and Atchison County Sheriff Dennis Martin.
