• The Pentecostal Church of God has purchased for a parsonage the C.H. Duncan property at 611 Elm Street. Pastor of the church, the Rev. Burke and Mrs. Burke, have now moved into the home and will be joined there shortly by their daughter, who at present is attending Bible school in Cleveland, Tennessee.
• A great many persons from Tarkio visited the scene of destruction this week at Worth, where a tornado virtually wiped out the entire town Tuesday afternoon. Fourteen lives were taken and nearly 100 of the 233 residents of Worth were injured. Warned by Mrs. Harlan King who saw the storm coming at her home a few miles from town, the teacher and the 18 pupils of the elementary school took shelter in a neighboring fruit cellar just shortly before the tornado tore down the school building and proceeded to level all buildings in its 200 yard path.
• A rare thing is the blooming of a magnolia tree in this area, but this spring the small trees are growing and their pretty blossoms are much in evidence. It is believed that perhaps there are only four such trees in Tarkio, those belonging to Mrs. George Stevenson, Mrs. G.A. Johnson, Mrs. Paul Phillips, and Dr. J.J. Riordan.

• Renovation and redecoration of the Walnut Inn was started this week by M. Robert McCoy, who purchased the business and took possession May 1. Improvements planned include new interior doors, carpet, area rugs, and lighting. A new ladies lounge and a new men’s restroom will be added in the lower level of the building and other improvements will be added when feasible.
• Voters in the Tarkio R-I School District gave overwhelming approval to a $335,000 bond proposal for additions to the elementary and high school buildings. There were 443 ballots in favor of the proposal and 173 against, giving approval by 73%. Construction on the additions is slated to start in late August with a 6,430 square foot hexagon shaped addition on the south end of the existing west wing of the elementary building and a rectangular structure with 8,600 square feet on the north side of the high school gym.
• Principal speaker for the 86th annual commencement of Tarkio College will be Robert J. Brown, special assistant to the President of the United States, Richard M. Nixon. He will be honored with a doctorate degree in Humane Letters.
• Captain Robert S. Hurtig, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Hurtig of Rock Port and a 1967 graduate of Tarkio College, has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. He distinguished himself in the performance of outstanding service to the United States as Director of Logistics, 6168th Combat Support Squadron, Taegu Air Base, Korea, from August 17, 1971, to August 4, 1972.
• The fifth grade school girls of Tarkio Elementary received pointers on care and styles of hair Wednesday, April 19, when they visited Edna’s Beauty Shop.

• A total of 65 runners and walkers participated in the Pelican Pursuit Saturday, April 26, at Big Lake State Park. The event, hosted by the Development Council of Community Hospital in Fairfax, raised over $8,500. Top pledge collector was John Gilbert of Fairfax who collected $452 in pledges and won a trip to Worlds of Fun.
• D.A.R.E., Atchison County, Inc., held its annual graduation for sixth grade students from Tarkio, Rock Port, and Fairfax schools who successfully completed the D.A.R.E. program. This year, 86 students participated.
• The Tarkio High School Cheerleaders are hosting a style show of prom dresses and salad luncheon Saturday, May 10. This is a new fundraising idea for the squad. Local and area young ladies will be modeling their prom/formal dresses and other entertainment, including some musical numbers, will take place.
