May 2, 1947
• On Friday evening, a party of some 20 or more boys and girls from the Baptist Church were enjoying a hayride when they had an upset. Too many crowding to one side of the rack caused it to tip over near the electric light plant at the south border of town. Paul Deatz suffered a leg injury and was taken to the Lutheran hospital in Omaha for treatment. Marie Moody got a bad bump on her head.
• Mrs. Arch Shurigar has begun the construction of two five-room residences in Nauvoo, just across the street from her home property. The work is well under way, with Harve Heckel doing the carpentry work.
• The Rock Port High School faculty announced this week that Miss Gertrude Boettner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Boettner of North Atchison County, has been declared the valedictorian of the 1947 graduating class. Miss Virginia Buck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Buck of Corning, will be the class salutatorian.

• Last week the fourth hour chemistry students were met at the entrance of the lab by thousands of marching termites. General Keith Harmon of the Third Infantry exterminated them by the use of chemical warfare. However, each day a new invasion of troops is discovered in some area of the building and they are quickly done away with by Walt Millsaps and his termite killer.
• On Saturday, April 29, the Honor Society will take their annual excursion and attend the Neil Diamond Concert in Kansas City. The tickets were $5.50 per person for reserved seats in Municipal Auditorium.
• A record nine people filed for the office of Atchison County Sheriff, most highly contested race in years. Running are: incumbent Paul Seymour, Harvey Ireland, Marion Steele, Harold Hulett, Kenneth Long, Jr., Gerald Ratliff, Bruce Hogue, Darrell Jones, and Joseph K. Ryan.
• This is the last year that Bugs Bunny, the Pink Panther, and other cartoon characters can help sell products on their T.V. shows. Neither can their real life masters of ceremonies after January 1, 1973. Moreover, sponsors will not be able to advertise more than 12 minutes per hour during children’s prime time viewing hours between 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

• Rock Port’s 9th Annual City-Wide Garage Sales had the town crawling with eager buyers.
• The Rock Port FFA Chapter sponsored a petting zoo for preschool, elementary, and senior citizens. This zoo had everything from fish to fowl. A python may have been the most unusual animal in attendance; favorite may have been the kid goats; and most expensive, a cow/calf pair. There were between 250 to 300 guests.
• The Rock Port Elementary and High School Art Show is being held at the Star Hill Prairie Art Center on Main Street. Some of the interesting exhibits include the art the third graders have exchanged with Germany, the fifth graders have their ideas of the 20th century Mona Lisa on display, and the 6th grade has a U.S. flag made from recycled materials.
