June 13, 1947

• Marvin Wolfe stopped in Tarkio last Thursday on his way by plane from New York to Boise, Idaho. After a short visit here he continued his trip, flying to Boise. The former Tarkio resident has a position as an aviator with the Department of Interior, Fishing, and Wildlife. From Boise Mr. Wolfe flew to Alaska, where he will remain until September.

• Approximately 100 friends met in the Glass Room at Fremont Park, Glendale, California, for the annual meeting of the Atchison County Club June 2. Officers for the ensuing year are: Austin Wyatt, president; and Nelle B. Dragoo, secretary-treasurer.

• Albert Rolf, who lives two miles south of Blanchard, miraculously escaped with mere bruises last Friday morning when he was caught on a bridge as it gave way. The bridge collapsed following heavy rains and will require a major repair job that will prohibit travel for some time at that point over the East Tarkio River three miles east of Westboro on Route C.

• Mr. and Mrs. Edward Sonnenburg have purchased from Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Flowers the house in which the Flowers have been residing on Main Street. Mr. and Mrs. Flowers will occupy an apartment over the Curfman Hardware Store in the Riordan building on Main Street.

June 15, 1972

• Mark Dalbey, son of Rev. and Mrs. Lloyd Dalbey of Tarkio, is one of 40 college students selected to be a member of the Seekers Christian Leadership World Study for 11 weeks this summer. The group will visit 30 countries, including Japan, India, Ethiopia, Egypt, Israel, Kenya, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, France, England, and Scotland.

• A new auto parts store, Tarkio Motor Supply, will open this week. The store is owned and operated by Harold and Virginia Bjorgaard in the building at 119 North Third leased from Ray Blackman.

• The Farmers and Valley Bank will hold an open house in their community room on June 20 in honor of Miss Kathleen Vette. The occasion will mark the 25th anniversary of Miss Vette’s employment with the bank.

June 12, 1997

• The Tarkio and Rock Port Community Garden Clubs’ Flower Show was held June 7. The Best of Show winner in the Artistic Design category was Shirley Case of Tarkio. The winner of the Award of Horticulture Excellence and Award of Horticulture Merit was Julie Burke of Rock Port.

• Members of Team Trinity, a group of 15 individuals from Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois, stopped for lunch at Pizza Hut in Tarkio Thursday, June 5. The group is riding bicycles from Deerfield to Palm Springs, California, a 30-day trek. They have experienced three flat tires, about 10 minor falls, and a few problems with dogs chasing them. The riders ride about 85 to 90 miles a day.

• Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan signed legislation that will eliminate the general state sales tax on food in Missouri. “As of October 1, the three percent general sales tax on food will be totally eliminated.”

• Over 50 sales are planned for the Tarkio City-Wide Garage Sales Saturday, June 14.

• The Tarkio Rodeo entertainment scheduled for June 13 and 14 will include Bob Courtney and his horse, Oxidol, a world-famous comedy trick horse. Oxidol had performed on stage with Yakov Smirnoff, the famous Russian comedian. Oxidol and Courtney were in the movie “Frank and Jesse” on HBO and Oxidol is the only rodeo horse to be immortalized as a Breyer’s horse model.
