Barbara Joann Case, the daughter of Clifford and Beulah (Harmon) Bowman, was born September 1, 1934, in Hamburg, Iowa. Joann passed away peacefully on June 5, 2022, with family by her side in Auburn, Nebraska, at the age of 87.

Joann’s childhood years were spent in the Missouri country with her six siblings, helping on the farm and tending to their animals. She worked at a soda fountain and attended Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri, graduating in 1953.

In 1953, Joann was united in marriage to Roy Case at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Westboro, Missouri. They made their home in the Watson, Missouri, area and became parents of two daughters, Deborah and Sheila. Roy and Joann later divorced, but raised their children across the street from one another. In 1979, Joann met her life companion, Bill Schmidt, who loved to make her laugh. They worked and shared their life together for several decades. Bill and Joann enjoyed wood-working crafts and working in their yard together in Watson. Bill passed away on October 15, 2011.

Joann had a lifelong love of all animals, especially horses and West Highland Terrier dogs. Joann was proudest riding in parades with her adorned Shetland ponies pulling the wagon and throwing candy to parade goers. Joann enjoyed spending time with family and never missed an important event of her grandchildren. She loved hosting holiday meals and making the family’s favorite dishes for which she was known. She always made sure that birthdays were special and celebrated and that her family was loved.

Joann worked as a Watson Telephone operator, at Rock Port Market & Jack & Jill, a school cook for the Watson and Rock Port schools, and as a meat cutter at Missouri Beef Packers and Cargill.

Besides her parents and life partner, Bill Schmidt, Joann was preceded in death by one sister, five brothers, and one grandson in-law. Survivors include daughter, Deborah (Kerry) Crain, Hamburg, Iowa, and Sheila (Danny) Cooper, Rock Port; grandchildren, Monica Bates, Nashville, Tennessee, Jeff Cooper (Mandy) Rosa Beach, Florida, Josh Crain (Kelly) Chicago, Illinois, Toby Crain (Theresa Fox), Hamburg, Sommer Crain (Marc Fuentes), Dallas, Texas, Chelsea Cooper, Rock Port, and Bill’s daughter, Shandra Underwood, San Marcos, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joann will be desperately missed by all those she has left behind.
