June 27, 1947

• A levee on the Heitman place northwest of Corning broke Wednesday morning and floodwaters from the Missouri River threatened to inundate a large acreage of adjacent lowland.

• Wayside Inn, Neal and Lydia Chambers, located two miles south of Fairfax on Highway 275, is advertising a dance with music provided by Hugh Lyle and Orchestra Thursday night, June 26. They also have fireworks for sale and chicken, steaks, and fish any day or night except Monday.

June 29, 1972

• Several Fairfax residents were among the 450 persons attending a testimonial dinner honoring Jerry Litton, candidate for Congressman from the Sixth District, held in St. Joseph Tuesday. The Litton family had been in Atchison County earlier Tuesday campaigning. Mr. Litton had attended Tuesday’s Fairfax Kiwanis Club meeting and spoke about his aspirations for the district if elected.

• Beginning July 1, the new Missouri photo driver’s license will not only include personal data, your signature, the Missouri state seal, its expiration date, and other official information, but your colorful photo.

• A number of young people from this community have formed a singing group which they call “Sing Out” and they are currently rehearsing for a performance at Mound City’s July 4th celebration Sunday evening.

• Sky Diving exhibitions by the First Infantry Division parachute team of Ft. Riley, Kansas, will be featured at the annual Fourth of July celebration in Rock Port Tuesday. Ball games and other entertainment, including a dance and fireworks, will also take place.

• Mrs. Virginia Moore retires today as an employee of the local post office. Her experience as a postal clerk spans 46 years, beginning in January 1926 in Burlington Junction, Missouri. She began at the local office in December of 1942 and received appointment as a career employee February 8, 1969. Postmaster Swan said that due to the cutback in postal expenditures, there probably won’t be a replacement for Mrs. Moore.

• Selections for June Yards of the Month were: Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Rogers, Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Southard, Mr. and Mrs. Danny Clark, and Betty Elder.

• The Fairfax varsity cheerleaders attended camp at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg June 10-12. The girls won first in cheer, second in sideline chant, and earned the spirit stick all three days, getting to bring it home with them. The girls also received golds individually. Magen Cooper and Katrina Ball were also selected as all-stars and will be eligible to make a trip to London, England, December 26-January 2.

• The new three bedroom, two-story home of Dr. and Mrs. David Scarbrough and family is going up in southeast Fairfax in the Volker addition.
