• Mrs. John Graf suffered an extensive loss of gladioli plantings when the current Missouri River flood extended over a portion of her husband’s farm just south of the Brownville bridge approach. She had set out some seven thousand bulbs on the acreage last spring. The flood destroyed them all.
• H.P. Savage, who is in charge of the local office for state automobile license collections, gives The Mail a report that since the office was established in Rock Port early in the year, receipts up to June 30 show a total of $31,851.52. Passenger car licenses, $19,364.50 for 1,811 sold; truck licenses, $6,665.23 for 579 sold; trailer licenses, $480 for 160 sold; and motorcycle licenses, $90 for 16 sold.
• Gordon Wells, who is serving with the 707th Ordnance Maintenance Co. in Korea and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Wells, had attempted to save a drowned comrade in the Hang Yang River June 7. Gordon was driving the rescue boat and when it got stuck, Gordon gave the drowned man artificial respiration for about an hour. Unfortunately the man and his other drowned comrade could not be saved. The man Gordon tried to resuscitate was from Holt County, Missouri.

• Thursday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Richards were Mr. and Mrs. Ross Richards of Puyallup, Washington, and Mrs. Robert Scott and son of Astoria, Oregon. Sunday the Richards family dinner was held at the W. J. Richards’ home. All seven of the Richards children were home for the first time since 1967 and all of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren with the exception of four.
• J.A. Tobin Co. reached the end of their first leg of paving Wednesday evening on the I-29 paving project. Paving footage for the 9” thick and 24’ wide interstate day by day is as follows: June 16, 3,158’; June 20, 4,095’; June 21, 4,594’; June 22, 4,903’; June 23, 4,400’; June 26, 5,308’; June 27, 2,892’; and June 28, 3,521’.
• A house painting party was held at the Bob Lipham home June 25. Members of the young adults Methodist Sunday School class helped the Liphams paint the outside of the home.
• Rock Port’s cheerleaders won honors at the Maryville cheerleader clinic with both the A and B teams. The school brought home the spirit stick for their outstanding performances. The A team won three blue ribbons, one red, and one white and won the spirit stick one day. The B team won three blue ribbons and two red ribbons. Rock Port cheerleaders include Sally Shubat, Patti Shineman, Teresa Miller, Becky Shubat, Cindy Randall, Lori Bogenreif, Jill Wanamaker, Julie Shineman, Sheri Bogenreif, Maralee Sweeton, and Rita Hendrickson.

• The weather service didn’t report a tornado, but the Stan Griffin family sure felt like one passed their home. Trees down on the decks, trees snapped off, and the impalement of a deck into trees certainly indicate a twister.
• The grand opening of Red Star Deli & Spirits was marked by a Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting. Owners Kelly and Tim Chard are offering the same fine selection of spirts with some new offerings on the deli side. Kelly is putting her talents to work for desserts and a wide variety of sandwiches and salads. Red Star Catering now has a base operation as the store room is now a well equipped kitchen.
• Maureen K. Jones, City Clerk/Administrator of the City of Rock Port, has been awarded the prestigious designation of Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks for achieving its high educational experience and service requirements.
