July 4, 1947

• The Board of Directors of Tarkio College this week accepted the resignation tendered by Miss Ruth Mitchell of the faculty at the time of commencement. Miss Mitchell has served her Alma Mater as instructor in commerce for more than 11 years. She received her degree from Tarkio College in 1935.

• Charles Crider is attending a two-week camp for reserve officers of the U.S.M.C. at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Mr. Crider served overseas as a Marine captain during WWII.

• The York 4-H Club is sponsoring a musical program by Holden Brothers from radio station WIBW, Topeka, Kansas, next Monday night, July 7, at the community building.

• J. W. Kelly of Fort Dodge, Iowa, has become a partner in the Rees and Copeland Lumber Company and will serve as manager of the business here. Mr. Kelly and his family will move from Fort Dodge to Tarkio when a suitable residence is obtained.

• A picnic lunch was held Monday at the community park for the children who have been attending the summer vacation Bible school at St. Paul’s Catholic Church. The four nuns who have been teaching here have returned back to St. Louis. There were several first communions received Sunday.

July 6, 1972

• A high temperature of 94 degrees was reached on the 30th followed by a low of 56 degrees on the 4th. There was 3.85 inches of precipitation measured during the month of June, making a six month total of 12.54, according to Lester Morton, local official weather observer.

• Robbers invaded the Atchison County Courthouse in Rock Port and made off with around $220 worth of property Wednesday night, June 28. The burglars entered through a window in Judge Gore’s office and although the money was safely locked in a vault, they stole two radios and a tape recorder, $48 worth of postage stamps, and the large American flag.

• Tarkio will be host to over 90 contestants and their families at the 17th annual Missouri State High School Championship Rodeo this weekend. Saturday afternoon the parade will start on Main Street led by mounted flag bearers. The Taylor County Sheriff’s Posse will be in the parade along with floats, saddle clubs, 4-H Horsemanship Clubs, and others to form one of the most colorful parades in the area. A dance will be held Saturday night with music provided by the Country Strings.

• Three Omaha teenagers spent Sunday night in the county jail in Rock Port following their attempt to blow up Duane Broermann’s rural Tarkio mailbox with firecrackers.

July 3, 1997

• The Farmers Market debuted Friday, June 27, in Tarkio. Some of the vendors included Tarkio Academy students who had raised plants at the local facility.

• The upcoming Baseball Arts Festival in Tarkio, to be held in conjunction with the C.A.B.A. World Series, will feature Britt Small & Festival at Niedermeyer Park Sunday, August 3.

• A Cub Scout Day Camp for area Cub Scouts was held in Tarkio Saturday, June 28. A variety of activities took place using the Wild West theme.
