July 4, 1947

• Billy, the 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gibson of near Craig, Missouri, suffered painful injuries Sunday morning. Billy was doing chores with his parents when a small pig got caught in a fence and its squeals infuriated the mother pig and she and six hogs attacked Billy. His left arm below the shoulder was crushed and his entire body bruised. However, the injuries were not as serious as feared.

• Mr. and Mrs. William Showalter celebrated their golden anniversary June 22 with a family dinner and open house. Twenty-four guests attended in the afternoon and 20 in the evening, including one friend, Miss Lois Sharp, who had also attended their wedding in 1897.

• Miss Lois Waits, Fairfax High School junior, was chosen queen of the Maitland Blue Grass Festival Wednesday night of last week and was crowned Thursday. Miss Waits won in a field of 23 contestants from northwest Missouri towns.

July 6, 1972

• A veteran 747 pilot met his death Tuesday morning when the experimental plane he was flying cross country went into a tail spin and crashed near Napier in Holt County, Missouri. A witness reported seeing the pilot’s body leaving the plane before it crashed. Junius D. Morrison, 59, of Miami Shores, Florida, had purchased the replica of a Curtiss-Wright pusher plane in Moses Lake, Washington, from college students who had built it. It was the type of plane which the veteran pilot had first learned to fly.

• The bodies of two Omaha youth were still missing Wednesday in a tragic mishap which took the lives of five mentally challenged youth and a counselor Sunday near Falls City, Nebraska.

• The office of collector of Fairfax officially changed hands Saturday when Dale Wake assumed duties from veteran E. O. “Dick” Flanagan. Flanagan had served as deputy for a few years before being elected to the office and completed 16 1/2 years on July 1, which was his birthday.

July 3, 1997

• Mrs. Ora Hayes was guest of honor at a family picnic at Big Lake State Park on Saturday, June 28, in celebration of her 88th birthday. The highlight of the fun-filled day was a quiz given on the life of the guest of honor.

• At the Kiwanis Club meeting, it was stated that 4,860 pounds of batteries had been taken to the recycling place Tuesday. Member Don L. Ray was congratulated for his hole-in-one at the golf course this week.

• Personnel changes have been made at the Fairfax School. Krista Sly will be the new elementary principal. Phillip Gegen of Mound City is the new high school math teacher, replacing Merylan Lowrey who will be assisting At-Risk students. Sixth grade teacher Cate Kenney resigned to accept a teaching position in Mound City. Jerry Whittington retired as a cook and Robin Hopkins has been hired to cook and manage the nutrition program. Don Stanford has been hired for the summer to paint and assist in the renovation of the science room.
