July 11, 1947
• Hamburg Reporter: Boys driving around town in a car and throwing firecrackers in a bottle injured a young boy. Clair Solzman was going home when a car came up and threw a firecracker enclosed in a glass bottle in his direction. Seeing the flying object coming toward him, he threw up his hand to protect his face. The firecracker exploded sending glass fragments into his right hand, arm, right side of his face and neck.
• The Scotch foursome golfing group, in which the losers treat the winners to a dinner, had their dinner at the Central Cafe. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Griffin made the arrangements for the dinner, at which 36 golfers were present.
• After a lapse of some months without a regular marshal, other than a night man, Rock Port now has a regular policeman in the person of Walter Burroughs. Walter, a young ex-serviceman, was appointed at Monday evening’s city council meeting and took up his duties Tuesday morning.
• George W. Showalter, a resident of Atchison County since age 17, died at his supper table on his 79th birthday Monday evening, July 7. His death was the result of a heart ailment.
July 6, 1972
• Marlene Walter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Walter, and Maralee Sweeton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Sweeton, Rock Port, received high point trophies for winning in various events at a horse show in White Cloud, Kansas.
• Kimosabi column: “Advice to ambitious lino operators – Don’t try to set type in your shorts. Once in a while, the hot metal squirts out of the machine and burnie, burnie, burnie.”
• A trustee in the custody of the Atchison County Sheriff’s Department walked away from the jail yard Wednesday afternoon, June 28. He was allowed to work on the grounds near the jail and courthouse for short periods. An all-points bulletin has been put out in the hopes of catching the fugitive, who was being held on a forgery charge.
• The Rock Port 4th of July celebration held at the city park was quite a success. Gathering a crowd of approximately 900 people, everyone enjoyed a day full of water fights, ball games, and fireworks. Special side entertainment included the most popular parachute demonstration featuring the Leader Captain’s Sinclair seven men parachuting team with the 1st Infantry Division Unit, Fort Riley, Kansas.

• Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class James R. King, son of Ray and Doris King of Rock Port, helped build a daycare center in the village of Bandanmae Kamman in Thailand during a U.S. and Thai military training exercise called Cobra Gold in May. Over 16,000 U.S. troops took part.
• Rock Port Baptist Church Vacation Bible School was held June 2-6. The theme was “The Big Hunt.” Fifty area children and 27 workers attended.
• Thirty area students were the recipients of the 1997 Esther A. and Bruce S. Gibbs Scholarship and honored at a luncheon Friday, June 20, in Rock Port. To date, 213 scholarships have been awarded, each for $1,250.
• Evelyn Perry, Assistant Trust Officer for Citizens Bank & Trust, has retired after 20 years of loyal service. A retirement party was held in her honor at Wheeler Inn in Auburn, Nebraska, Saturday, June 28.
• Chats: “The internet is here and now accessible with a local call. The Rock Port Telephone Company can set you up on Heartland Net. What little I’ve wandered has raised my telephone bill from locating old army buddies. It’s upon us ‘Orwells.’ ‘1984’ with Big Brother is a reality! There will be more to come as things change for the better, maybe.”
