• When S. F. Williams went to his feed lot Wednesday morning, he found 10 of his purebred Poland China Shoats dead and five or six others badly injured, supposedly the result of a raid by dogs. The shoats weighed from 80 to 100 pounds each and at the present market, represent a considerable loss. The larger hogs in another pen nearby were not bothered.

• A system of permanent automobile registration, starting in 1949, was approved when Governor Phil Donnelly signed the bill Monday. After next year, permanent license plates will be issued and each year, automobile owners will buy a detachable tag to denote the year of registration.

• A law which will become effective September 10 will make possession of liquor by a minor in public places a misdemeanor and the law also makes it a misdemeanor for any person to sell liquor to a minor.

• The Community Betterment sponsored ice cream social to benefit victims of the South Dakota flood was deemed very successful when $195 was collected Sunday. Held in the city park shelter house, ice cream and cakes were donated by various community organizations and many volunteer workers turned out to assist in serving over 100 patrons of the affair.

• Mr. and Mrs. William A. Perkins will be honored with an open house Sunday, July 16, at the Baptist Church in Fairfax in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple was married in Stockton, Kansas, July 19, 1922, and have lived in Fairfax for the past 29 years.

• After 23 years as chief of the Fairfax Fire Department, W. L. Harrington has resigned that post. Harrington also serves as City Marshal and is employed by the city in the water and street departments. He is succeeded by Winfred Watkins, who has been assistant chief.

• Mrs. Florence Dunlap won “Yard of the Month” honors for July. Second place went to Mr. and Mrs. Gary Smith.

• Over The Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “The Fairfax Community Betterment workers who went door to door should be thanked because through their efforts, Fairfax will be receiving the grant they applied for . . .” “Thought for the day . . . ‘Nothing is impossible for those who don’t have to do it themselves.’”

• Danielle Beck and Melinda Bradfield placed first in the Chapter Showcase of STAR Events at the recent state FHA Leadership Conference held in Columbia, Missouri. The title of their seven-minute speech and display was “Color My World with FHA.”

• Sunday, July 6, 1947, was unseasonably cool when Ralph Dale Seymour, Jr. married Dorothie “Pat” French in Cameron, Missouri. The couple recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. “How our perspectives change,” says Pat. “I can remember when married couples together this long were really old.”
