July 25, 1947

• Odd Stienholz, student at Maryville State Teachers College and a citizen of Norway, was the speaker at the Kiwanis luncheon Tuesday noon and proved to be an interesting one. He spoke on world conditions and American-Russian relations as observed by one not a citizen of either country.

• Everett Deardorff has leased the building now occupied by Marguerite’s Dress Shop and will move his barber shop to that location about August 1. The shop has been in a portion of the Burte Gomel building on east Main Street. Mr. Gomel will use the space the shop occupied for a display room.

• From where no one seems to know, a skunk made his appearance on the lower end of North Broadway Tuesday afternoon. He must have heard that there are good shows at the fair theatre, for he tried to enter the front door and only the presence of the owner, Don Fraser, and a traveling salesman standing in the door kept him from entering.

• Smoke was seen coming from the Stoner Machine Shop about five o’clock Saturday morning by Nightwatchman John Nauman, who turned in the alarm. With less than a block to go, the fire-fighting apparatus and crew were soon on the job and extinguished the blaze. The fire had smoldered all night and burned a hole about a foot and a half by four feet in the wooden floor.

• New gravel was laid on Highway No. 46 east of Fairfax this week. The gravel is being unloaded from the railroad cars in Fairfax.

July 27, 1972

• To end the summer baseball season, the Fairfax Pee Wees have challenged their mothers to a game on the local diamond Friday evening. The mothers have accepted and an interesting match is shaping up. Proceeds will go toward buying equipment.

• The City of Fairfax has received delivery of its radar speed gun which was put into action during the past few days. Five arrests were made by Deputy Floyd Simpson Tuesday. In each case, a bond of $10 was posted and forfeited.

• Rev. Gary Metcalf, pastor of the United Methodist Church, was speaker at the Tuesday luncheon. He gave a slide-illustrated report on a recent study mission to England and Holland.

• One of the oldest continuous celebrations in this area, the Craig Reunion, will be held for the 77th year July 27-30. The Story-Hardin Post No. 164 sponsors the event.

July 24, 1997

• Over The Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “Thought for the day… ‘You know you’re growing old when your children begin to look middle aged.’”

• Kelly Bowman, a 1997 graduate of Fairfax High School, has completed Sea World of Texas’s Careers Camp. Kelly accompanied Sea World’s animal care and training staff as they performed duties involving sea lions, stingrays, killer whales, sharks, penguins, and other fascinating species.

• The annual luncheon for volunteers given by Community Hospital Association was held July 17. Marilyn Alldredge welcomed 25 members and one guest. A total of 4,093 hours were given by volunteers from July 1, 1996, to July 1, 1997, and Auxiliary donations to the hospital totaled  $7,480.85. Marilyn also announced the Auxilian of the Year is Lea Fair.
