August 8, 1947

• Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Greenley’s son Rob Roy has been on a cruise from the naval academy at Annapolis, Maryland, the cruise covering European waters and visits to various countries. He writes, “Our recent visit to Southern England has been most enjoyable and educational. I only wish that everyone in the states could visit the ancient churches and cathedrals, see the remains of a glorious past, the ravages of a terrible war, and the strength of the people who have had too little too long.”

• After 30 years, Guy Andermann, employed as maintenance and construction head at Rock Port Mutual Telephone Co., has quit to look after his home and farming interests at the east edge of town.

• Harold Luhrs and Ralph Bennington, members of the Flying Farmers of America, went to St. Joseph early Thursday morning of this week in the Luhrs plane to join other members of the organization for a breakfast before taking off for Stillwater, Oklahoma, where they planned to attend a meeting of the national organization. Dick Garst of Watson, who is the official Missouri state delegate, also made the trip in his private plane.

• Rock Port has four active churches but for the time being the town is without a minister. Couples desiring to be married in Rock Port this week would be unable to find a minister here to tie the matrimonial knot.

August 3, 1972

• A new immunization law signed by Governor Warren Hearnes places Rubella German or the three day measles and Rubeola, the red measles, on the list of diseases against which all children entering school must be immunized.

• The Rock Port Fire Department was called July 27 at 11:30 p.m. to a car-pickup accident on U.S. 275 which fatally burned Mr. Teddy Dunn of Tarkio. Delvan Vankleek of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, driver of the car, was extricated from his auto by the fire department’s use of the new porta-power spreader jack.

• Mr. and Mrs. Oba Sybert, owners and operators of the White Rock Motel in Rock Port, became the owners of the Champlin Station located west of Rock Port on U.S. 136.

• Rock Port’s swim team placed 2nd at the Conference Championship Swim Meet in Maryville July 28.

July 31, 1997 

• Team RTP, a basketball team of incoming freshmen girls from Rock Port and Tarkio, completed the Heartland Recreation Center’s Sizzlin’ Hot Hoops summer league with a perfect 8-0 record. Team members are Jill Webster, Bridgette Kennell, Anne Reynolds, Erica Corken, Melanie Moore, Jessica Moran, Ashely Poptanycz, Hillary Chamberlain, Beth Pearson, Galadriel Gratton, and Brandy Buttercase. The team is coached by Eric Chamberlain.

• The Grand Prize for Best Float at the Atchison County Fair Parade went to John Currie and Jerry Chase of Tarkio for their 1925 Model T pickup. Receiving first place prizes were: Jays’ Nest, Best Float in the business and organization category; Lutheran Church, church entries; Gary Bussard and his 1957 Buick, autos 1950-1997; and Treyton Lewis and his bigfoot pickup, kids’ category.

• A hail storm devastated crops in the Watson area Wednesday morning, July 23. Corn and beans were almost 100% stripped of their foliage.
