August 8, 1947

• Mrs. C. R. Combs has left her post as Forum correspondent for the Oak Grove community. Mr. and Mrs. Combs have purchased property in Tarkio and will move to it as soon as improvements on it are completed. The Forum editor has published newspapers for 39 years and has never had a more efficient, more regular, or more loyal correspondent than Mrs. Combs.

• Jimmy Sly, S 1/c, son of Harry A. Sly of Fairfax, has been in the service since March of 1946. He left San Francisco July 31 on board the ship Nantaakia on a cruise that will take him to Pearl Harbor, Arabia, across the equator, through the Straits of Gibraltar, and to the East Coast.

• F. C. Whitford, chairman of the ticket sales committee, announces that the advance sale of tickets for the 4-State Roundup will start Saturday. Strong, high fences separating the arena from the seats are being erected this week. Chutes, pens, and other necessary equipment are also being constructed. Many of the nation’s famous cowboys and cowgirls have assured the Bilby brothers they will be here to compete with the idea of sharing in the more than $3,500 in awards offered.

August 10, 1972

• Thirty-five women from the Fairfax area boarded a chartered bus at 4:00 a.m. Friday morning, July 28, and began a four-day sightseeing tour of South Dakota. Women of the Milton Club were sponsors of the trip.

• David Evans, a graduating senior at the University of Missouri – Columbia, was one of 1,050 graduates to receive their diplomas August 4 in the new Warren E. Hearnes multi-purpose building which was dedicated that night to Governor Hearnes.

• Mr. and Mrs. Doyne Swan earned Yard of the Month recognition for August with their well-tended lawn with its bright accents of flowers. Pine Acre neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Grubb, were named as second place winners.

• Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. Fred Kling and Marshal Wayne Harrington were guests of Kiwanis at the Tuesday luncheon and explained the operation of the newly acquired speed gun for traffic control in Fairfax. 

• Dave Quimby of Westboro grew an 18 pound head of cabbage. [The absolutely huge vegetable was pictured in the Forum with Wayne Jones of Fairfax holding it.] 

August 7, 1997

• Over The Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “I must thank those who brought me corn and tomatoes from their garden. It was delicious! I even ate tomatoes at breakfast, they tasted so good.” “I had a delightful experience this past week. Miss Lacy Jumps of Red Oak, Iowa, job shadowed me. She is interested in writing and the newspaper field…She plans to come back and help develop pictures at Fairfax Fair time.”

• The 6th Annual CommuniTee Benefit Golf Classic sponsored by the Community Hospital Association Development Council has grown to capacity for a one day tournament. After the outpouring of golfer responses, the committee feels it must now make both Friday and Saturday full days of play at Rock Port.

• The 1997 Missouri State Fair is August 14-24 and this year there is a new reason to attend. Country Gospel Reunion, comprised of Rick Sons, Bill Sons, and Lori White, will be performing there on August 21.
