• George Balle of near Tarkio has purchased from Dr. G. R. Wempe and now is busy tearing down the building known as the Old Buster House on Broad Street. Built in 1880, the construction has been one of the old landmarks of Tarkio. When the building and city were new, the property was known as the Clawson House and used as a boarding house.
• Paul Bestor of Newark, New Jersey, member of the board of directors of Tarkio College, is the newly-elected president of the “Friends of the Land,” a conservation organization that hopes to keep this country from following the paths of China and India in soil depletion.
• Sweltering heat has boosted the ice sales in the past three weeks and the local plant at the Missouri Service Company has found itself unable to satisfy the demand. With its capacity for 17 tons of ice daily, the plant is not only supplying Tarkio users, but also Rock Port, Fairfax, and Westboro, Missouri, and Northboro, Iowa, residents.

• Torrey Pines on Hwy. 59 South, Tarkio, is holding its grand opening Monday, August 21, to celebrate its new additions all at one convenient location – car wash, self-service gas station, and restaurant.
• Mr. and Mrs. Don Purtle will observe their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, August 27, with an open house in the parlor of the United Methodist Church, Westboro, Missouri. They were married August 28, 1922, at the Methodist parsonage in Westboro by Reverend Sauceman.
• Miss Carol Van Hoozer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max Van Hoozer of Tarkio, reigned over the Sidney Rodeo all last week following her coronation Tuesday.
• Frank S. Peterson, member of the Allen-Schiffern Post No. 199 of the American Legion and currently historian of the post, has been named by Legion National Headquarters as a Life Member of the Club. He has been a legion member for 53 continuous years.

• Jimmie D. Grebe, a 44 year employee of the Missouri Department of Transportation, retires from the department effective September 1, 1997. Grebe, who is currently a construction inspector, began his career with MoDOT in 1953.
• The Tarkio Community Garden Club’s selection of August Yards of the Month include: Louise Scamman, Mr. and Mrs. Leland Crapson, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kelly, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bennett, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Smith, Mary Anne White, and Tarkio Golf Course.
• A welcome party for the new Tarkio R-I music teacher and his wife, Steven and Heather Cross, will be held August 23 at the South City Park in Tarkio.
• After 22 teams competed in the 12th year of the C.A.B.A. 11 and Under World Series, the Bayamon, Puerto Rico, team earned the winning trophy. The Miami, Florida, Dream Team placed 2nd, and the Wisconsin team placed 3rd.
