August 22, 1947
• Three days of fun for everyone are planned for the third annual Tarkiesta September 10-13. The event will include a dance, air show, parade, hog show and auction, farm and home display, prizes, aerialists, band concert, carnival rides, concessions, and ball games. A souvenir booklet is being printed for delivery in the near future “to the doorstep” and will include accounts of prizes, premiums, and programs to be given in connection with the celebration.
• Lloyd Martin, a Tarkio College graduate and son of Dr. and Mrs. A. W. Martin of Tarkio, will receive his doctor of philosophy degree from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, August 29. Lloyd will be in charge of the research laboratory of the Mallinckrodt Chemical Company in St. Louis, Missouri.
• At “The Tarkio” Sunday through Tuesday, August 24 through 26, is “Duel in the Sun” with Jennifer Jones, Gregory Peck, Lillian Gish, Walter Huston, and Charles Bickford with a cast of 2,500. Directed by King Vidor, this is David O. Selznick’s Technicolor production.
• Galen McMaster has accepted a position as commerce teacher and coach of football and basketball at Westboro for the coming year. He, his wife, and child will make their home in Tarkio and he will commute daily.
• Cain and Lindsay’s service station and nearby house located north of Tarkio on Highway 59 sold last week to Taylor Voorhees and son, J.E. Voorhees, who will operate the station and live in the house.
• Miss Mary Louise Shields of Red Oak, Iowa, who graduated from Tarkio College in the spring, left August 13 for the North Sudan, where she will teach in the Girls Boarding School at Khartoum.
August 24, 1972
• Seventy-five to 80 prospects and six student assistants are expected to show up at the 1972 Tarkio College football camp beginning August 27. Thirty more prospects are expected to join the team when school begins. For the first time in 80 years of Tarkio College football, there are more prospects than the coaches are able to handle.
• The lunch program at Tarkio R-I will feature two completely different lunch options this year. Students in grades 7-12 will have a choice between whatever meal is served that day or a hamburger, French fries, vegetable, dessert, and milk. The special meal will cost 10¢ extra.
August 21, 1997
• The recently disbanded VFW Post 4614 made a donation to the local baseball and softball programs. The post took the balance of its treasury and voted to donate it to the local ball programs.
• Holly Newlon of Tarkio was a summer youth worker at the Tarkio Nutrition Center. The center held a reception for her August 13 and presented her with a money tree thanking her for her service. Holly is a sophomore at Tarkio High School.
• Sonya Hernandez, daughter of Elda Smith of Tarkio, walked and ran all 26.2 miles in the Midnight Sun Marathon in Anchorage, Alaska, Saturday, June 21. Sonya was one of 20 other Nebraskans who had pledged to raise $3,500 for the Leukemia Society. The participants traversed the woods on bike trails, paved roads, an old tank trail, and through a muddy, rutted section.
• Tarkio Academy is feeling the strain resulting from the UPS strike, which was in its third week. UPS was the primary source of shipping things into and out of the academy.
