• Coach Richard Hinderliter of the high school faculty has purchased the last of four houses which Henry Stapel and H. Charles Cox built in the Fairview addition just west of the school’s athletic field. He will now have a bird’s-eye view of the field on which his athletes perform.
• Last Saturday night, thieves stole the Orville Wolf automobile from the driveway of the Wolf home and wrecked it on the curve just east of Hamburg. The ’42 Ford sedan was one of many vehicle thefts reported in and around Hamburg the same night.
• The Eshelman Music Co. of St. Joseph last week installed a fine Wurlitzer electric organ in the Rock Port Methodist Church. The instrument was put into use for the first time at Sunday morning’s services.
• Mrs. Clara Rhine passed away September 12 at the age of 91. Clara was born to William G. and Susan Sparks Bartholomew in the Banner district west of Rock Port July 10, 1856. Clara married Isaac Newton Rhine on March 7, 1886, in Emery, Nebraska, where both had homestead claims in Holt County. Mr. Rhine helped put the first railroad through that part of the country, he and his bride living in a sod house.
• Businesses in Rock Port have attractive window displays showing off antiques in celebration of the Atchison County Fair. The antiques include old-time glassware and utensils, clothing, furniture, children’s toys, doctor’s equipment, phonograph, music box, miniature organ, arrowheads, photographs, and much more!
September 14, 1972
• After Oscar Landen’s big harvest of 15 spuds weighing 14 pounds, along comes Harold Warren with 15 that tip the scale at 20 1/2 pounds. They were Kennebecks and solid as a rock.
• Workmen are busy putting in an 8-inch water pipe along Hwy. 136 for the construction of Rock Port’s $420,686 water works improvement project. Donaldson Construction Company of Maryville began work August 25 laying 27,000 feet of pipeline.
• Mrs. Jim Markham has been hired as secretary to Gene Moe, county engineer, at a salary of $2.00 per hour on a day-to-day need basis.
• Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hawkins, Kay Jean, and Lea Anne visited in West Des Moines, Iowa. While there, the family attended the Iowa State Fair and had the opportunity to see Sonny and Cher.
• In “Yucatan-Mexican Frontier”: Traveling up and down thousands of steps was a big part of seeing the Mexican pyramids and temples. Many a tourist had to climb down backwards or rumpwise just to be on the safe side.

• The “Yard of the Month” for September belongs to Oscar and Margaret Moore. They live at 306 Washington.
• Rock Port’s 4th, 5th, and 6th graders traveled to Skidmore, Missouri, to visit the “The Moving Vietnam Memorial” wall. The group listened to veterans speak, viewed materials and accounts, and paid their respects at the wall.
• Heavy rains to the north brought Rock Creek up to a full bank level. Thankfully, it was short lived.
• The First Lutheran Church held its annual celebration of God’s love August 24 with a day that began with a festive worship service and inspirational music. More than 60 people gathered later for the “Master’s Open” golf tournament, with this year being a benefit to Cherished Cherubs Childcare Center. The day concluded with a barbecue and an olympics, which included hula hoop contests, egg races, and egg toss contest.
• The Rock Port High School art department welcomes new teacher Ms. Denise Rieschick. Ms. Rieschick teaches K-12 art, general art, painting, drawing, and 3-D design.
