September 19, 1947

• Charles W. Close of Skidmore is now enjoying a visit with his relatives in England whom he had not seen for 33 years until he arrived there last week. He plans to stay 30 days with his brother and sister and visit many scenes of his childhood. His round trip plane ticket cost $717 and he was allowed to take 60 pounds of baggage.

• David Lyle Umbarger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Umbarger, born Monday, September 12, has 11 grandparents. David will not be altogether at fault if he develops some symptoms of being spoiled.

• Two Atchison County women are serving on the first federal court jury that ever convened in St. Joseph with women members. They are Mrs. Frances Creed of Fairfax and Mrs. Ruth Hills of Tarkio.

• Members of the freshman class and their sponsor gave Bea Graham a most pleasant surprise Tuesday evening by calling on her at the L. A. Stoner home. They brought a delicious lunch and presented Bea, who has been ill, with a beautiful comb and brush set.

September 21, 1972

• A hard charging offensive line and a balanced rushing attack from five backs led the Fairfax Bulldogs to their first victory of the football season. The Bulldogs defeated West Nodaway Rockets 28-6.

• The Fairfax Post Office will become part of a new concept in mail handling September 25 when an “Area Mail Processing” plan goes into effect in Fairfax and other surrounding posts offices. All nonlocal mail will be transported to a central location – St. Joseph – for postmarking, cancelling, sorting, and dispatch.

• Three parcels of land from the J.A. Buck estate near Corning sold Friday for $181,450 or an average of $348 per acre for the 520 acres. The Bucks were early pioneers in Corning and the land had been in the family since early settlement of this area.

September 18, 1997

• Vernie and Euthel Smith will be visiting in Fairfax the week of September 20-26. They plan to visit with friends at the Community Room in Fairfax.

• Editor/Publisher Nancy Gaines is a patient in Community Hospital. The Forum is being produced this week by very capable employees Lois and Dean Wiley with a few assists from friends.

• The Fairfax Lady Bulldogs Volleyball Team won the Shenandoah, Iowa, Tournament this past weekend. The girls played Farragut, Essex, Tarkio, and Shenandoah.

• Community Hospital Association in Fairfax has hired a new general surgeon, Gary J. Galvin, M.D. Dr. Galvin is returning to the midwest from Washington, Pennsylvania. He and his wife and daughters are living in Shenandoah.
