• In the whisker contest at the Atchison County Fair, Wayne “Mandy” Thompson was the winner. His fine beard won him a place in the Centennial pageant Thursday evening, when he portrayed Abraham Lincoln.
• A 19-year-old Tarkio youth who was being held in the Atchison County Jail under charges of having burglarized some Tarkio places of business, made his escape Friday night while Sheriff Gaines and family were attending the County Fair. He tore a set of bars loose and climbed over a steel partition to make his escape. By Saturday the youth was returned to the jail.
• The oldest dress displayed in the Centennial pageant last Thursday evening was 98 years old. It is the property of Mrs. Don Rankin and was brought to this country from Germany by Mrs. Fredericka Traub.
• Thad Kerr, realtor, reports the sale of Mrs. Jos. R. Parker’s residence property in Nauvoo to Carl Moulder. The house is at present occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Gratz Brown.
September 21, 1972
• Gary L. Staples of Rock Port enrolled in Wentworth Military Academy in a ceremony held in Rock Port. The school is opening its 93rd school year. Major Tom Johnson, director of development and financial aid officer at the school, and Mrs. Keith Staples were on hand for the signing.
• Men bulldozed out 4.5 acres donated to the Hunter Cemetery by Mrs. Linnie Hunter of Rock Port. The original donator to start the cemetery in the 1800’s was John H. Hunter who gave 10 acres. They started clearing out the land in 1835.
• The Templeton Homemakers met September 7 at the home of Mrs. Elvin Schroeder with nine members, two visitors, and one baby present. A book report on “Raisins and Almonds” was presented by Miss Dorothy Proper.
• The best way to earn a rest is to complete your work.
September 18, 1997
• Bowlers Marie Catlett, Susan Long, Bobbi Slenker, and Jo Stevens, all of Rock Port, and Marti Young of Auburn, Nebraska, members of the Women’s Bradley Engine Service bowling team, competed in the WIBC Championship Tournament in Reno, Nevada. The ladies placed second out of 2,824 Division III teams and won a $1,889 cash prize.
• Mr. and Mrs. Don Mobley attended the National County Agents Association annual meeting this summer in Burlington, Vermont. The programs featured keynote speakers on modern day concerns in agriculture and tours. The Mobleys also made side trips to the Atlantic Ocean, Boston, Cape Cod, Nova Scotia, Plymouth Rock and Plantation, and JFK Library.
• Old Fashioned Saturday Night was a huge success. There was even a recreation of an old fashioned shoot-out and hanging on Main Street with Danny Cooper having a “swinging good time.”
• William J. “Bill” Smith, former employee of Tiffany Care Center, was honored by the Atchison County Commission during a reception at the courthouse September 18. Bill was recognized for his services as a carpenter to help construct a wooden deck on the east side of Pleasant View Rest Home.
• Community 2000 is sponsoring a dance for Atchison County young people in grades 7-12. This group is working diligently to educate all on the perils of drugs and alcohol. This dance is an alternative.
