• The White Hussars, a nationally known ensemble of musicians, produced and directed by Major Herbert Petrie, will open the Artist Course series at Tarkio College with their appearance at Rankin Hall. This season, the company is made up of a brass quartet and a pianist, featured in unusual combinations, displaying versatility among the personnel in singing and solo playing, brilliant arrangements and a delightful injection of humor throughout.
• L. L. Garst, who lives near Watson, is featured in an illustrated article in the October issue of Capper’s Farmer entitled, “They Won’t Stay Down.” A photograph of Garst’s plane accompanies the story. Garst’s plane is named Linda, a 4-place, all metal Ryan Navion.
• Forrest McGinnis and son, J. W., and Ted Nixon attended a Wurlitzer phonograph meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, Sunday.
• The Tarkio Electric Company has moved to a temporary location at the Atchison County Implement warehouse on Main Street. The building formerly housed the George Knepper business before it was moved to the new John Deere store.
• A minimum temperature for the week’s period occurred yesterday when the mercury fell to 38.2 degrees at 6:30 a.m. The period’s maximum temperature occurred September 18 at 3:30 p.m. when the reading was 94.7 degrees.
• John Henry Ohrt, 16, of Watson had a day of triumph Tuesday in St. Joseph at the annual St. Joseph Interstate Baby Beef and Pig Club 4-H Show. Ohrt’s three Chester White Barrows were in competition with more than 1,200 entries in the swine section and not only produced the grand champion of the show, but took first money in both the pen of three and individual competition of that breed. They were named reserve champion pen of three of all breeds and took part in the winning county pen of 15 animals.

• Hans Fantel, a native of Vienna, Austria, and a 1945 Tarkio College graduate, is the author of “The Waltz Kings.” Vienna’s past splendor is reflected through this lilting biography of two musical geniuses, father and son, each named Johann Strauss. At the age of 14, Mr. Fantel was twice taken into custody by the Gestapo and escaped both times, finally to make his way to the United States.
• Mr. Bruce Hogue has been hired as a custodian by the Tarkio School System. He will be working with Mr. Paul Martin at the high school building.
• Ashes are all that remain of the disastrous fire at the Jim Postlewait farm home east and south of Tarkio Monday night. The family was out of town when the fire started about 9:00 p.m., apparently as a result of lightning, and swiftly spread throughout the entire house.
• The recent issue of “Contact” magazine published by the Light and Power Co. has a story of the work being done at the Walnut Inn Towne Room by Edna O’Dell, aunt of owner M. Robert McCoy.

• More than 50 junior high and high school students at Tarkio R-I will be participating in a parenting simulation called “Baby Think It Over” through the Family and Consumer Sciences Department. Each student will be using an infant simulator doll or “baby” that looks, feels, weighs, and cries like a real baby.
• The attendance for Tarkio Junior High’s parent night was excellent. Parents and students met in the gymnasium with Principal Ed Defenbaugh talking about changes that have taken place in junior high policies, including keeping the junior and senior high schools separate.
