• With this issue The Forum goes on a strictly cash in advance subscription basis, and a few people are failing to get their papers this week. Recent postal rulings require an affidavit once a year that subscriptions are paid in advance. National advertisers also insist that papers with whom they place business have paid-up lists.

• Dan Martin has sold that portion of his farm located north of Highway 275 to his brother, Wayne Martin. The tract consists of 100 acres and has the improvements on it. It is one mile east of Fairfax.

• Mrs. Nell Carmean, who some time ago purchased a residence property from Jimmy and H.A. Sly, has had a basement dug just west of the former house location and last week moved the building over it. She will completely modernize the property and move into it to make her home.

• Fairfax baseball fans were in for a treat when the Merchants beat Falls City, Nebraska, 15-9 in Fairfax’s last game of the season. C. Heits of Craig was on the mound.

• Clair Oliver of Falls City has purchased from Crawford & Simmons the building and equipment known as the Hewitt shop and has opened a machine and welding shop.

October 5, 1972

• Fairfax Sorosis opened the fall season with a Polynesian luncheon served in the hospitality room of the Fairfax Baptist Church October 2. The program consisted of slides of Hawaii and native flowers, fruits, trees of the state, and slides of the volcano area. Nineteen members and one guest attended.

• Calories and bargains! Local FHA students are sponsoring a bake and rummage sale at the Home Ec room October 14. Proceeds will be used to finance Future Homemakers of America projects during the year.

• Kiwanians observed events of special significance at Tuesday’s regular luncheon meeting at the Methodist dining room. It was the special appearance of Division Two’s Lieut. Gov. Dick Knox from the St. Joseph Club and the 94th birthday observation of member Floyd Williams. Officers installed were: Gene Carder, president; Waldo Thomson, first vice president; Eugene Bradfield, second vice president; M.D. Mulvania, secretary; and Bob Alldredge, treasurer.

• At the annual meeting of stockholders of the Exchange Bank of Fairfax last week, Bob Alldredge was named to the Board of Directors, replacing the late R.D. Seymour. Mr. Alldredge joined the bank staff in July of 1969.

October 2, 1997

• In order to honor their grandparents, the Fairfax kindergarten class performed four skits and served cookies and punch September 12. Approximately 25 grandparents attended and Harry Combs, guest reader, read a story to the children.

• Over the Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “Thought for the day… ‘Worry is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do, but doesn’t get you anywhere.’”

• The Fairfax marching band entered its first parade of the season Saturday in Shenandoah, Iowa, and came home with first place. A new band banner has been ordered and it is hoped it will be here before the band goes to the parade Saturday, October 4, in Clarinda, Iowa.
