The East Atchison Wolves’ and the Rock Port Blue Jays’ varsity football teams met Saturday, September 24, on the Tarkio field.

From the beginning, this game did not go how most had envisioned. East Atchison was set to receive the ball to start the game, when Blue Jay Jarrett Hunter squib kicked the ball that would bounce off an EA player and Rock Port recovered. This set Rock Port up for Phillip Herron to run it down to the 10 yard line and Micah Makings would punch it in from 10 yards out. EA would waste no time answering back as Braden Graves would take the hand-off from Blake Simmons and scramble 46 yards to the one yard line, where Blake would run a quarterback keeper up the middle for six. EA’s two point conversion was no good making the score 6-6. Both Rock Port and East Atchison’s defenses would come up big as there were no more points allowed during the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Wolves went to work moving the ball to the Jays’ 26 yard line when quarterback Blake Simmons would hit Jarrett Spinnato in a screen pass and he did the rest, taking it to the house for six. Graves’ two point conversion was good making the score 14-6 EA. Rock Port would answer back following a big run by Phillip Herron and a timely penalty, and quarterback Aidan Burke would find the end zone bringing the score to 14-12. On East Atchison’s next drive, Jarrett Spinnato would take the hand-off from Blake Simmons and go 48 yards to the three yard line before being brought down by Dylan Lair. On the next play, Spinnato would walk it in for six. His two point conversion was good, making the score 22-12. Following the kick-off Rock Port would move the ball to mid-field before Burke would hit Brecken Kelly on a crossing route for a 30 yard reception and run giving them the ball on the 10 yard line. Micah Makings would punch it in to bring the score at halftime to 22-18 East Atchison.

The third quarter was a defensive battle with EA’s Jarrett Spinnato being the only one to score. With the score 28-18 to start the fourth quarter the Jays would get a short field as they would take over on downs following an incomplete pass on fourth down. Three plays later Micah Makings would find the endzone for six. This would bring the score to 28-24 EA.

The two teams would battle back and forth until late in the fourth quarter when Cade Makings came up with an interception to give the Jays the ball on their own 27 yard line. Following some good runs and a penalty the Jays would make their way to the four yard line before runningback Micah Makings, with a good second effort, would hit pay dirt. Quarterback Aidan Burke’s two point conversion would be good to give the Jays the lead 28-32 for the second time of the game.

With just under a minute the Wolves would start their last drive on their own 35 yard line. EA would have little success on the ground before quarterback Blake Simmons would hit Spinnato across the middle to move the ball to Rock Port’s 26 yard line. Three plays later, runningback/quarterback Jarrett Spinnato would hit offensive end Trenton Kingery on a pass over the middle. Kingery lunged forward to give the Wolves the lead and the win 34-32. This was a hard fought game by both teams.

East Atchison will be traveling to Mound City and Rock Port will be home against King City on Friday.
