October 10, 1947
• Gratz Bartholomew has rented and taken possession of the Helmer building from which Lee Vogel recently removed and which has been occupied by the Rupe & Phelps truck line and Rupe Jeep Sales Company. Bartholomew will utilize the building for his undertaking stock.
• Rock Port has a new street commissioner, Aaron Kellogg, who took up his duties late last week and has been diligently engaged in cleaning up trash since then.
• Local old-timers will take on the regular Rock Port Cardinals next Sunday at 2 o’clock on the local city park field.
• Through arrangements which have been made by Paramount Theatre, a demonstration of a powerful army searchlight, which throws a searching beam five miles into the air, will take place Saturday night.
• The county court of Atchison County received a war department bridge from Norfolk, Virginia, which cost the county only $345 for freight. It was unloaded at Langdon. The 72 foot bridge came in sections and is valued at $6,000. The court has not yet decided where the bridge will be erected.
October 5, 1972
• Students voted Sally Shubat and Bill Anders to reign as Rock Port Homecoming Queen and King.
• In Rock Port’s small high school band, there are 1,180 twinkling toes marching in rain, hail, or shine, in everything from the Kass Kounty King Korn Karnival to the St. Joe Steers home openers. Good old Coach Meisinger got together with the Brown Shoe Co. and ordered band shoes. This will solve the problem of having to paint your Dad’s house slippers because your tennis shoes have rotted and will also make the band look more uniform.
• Two separate accidents caused several hundred dollars in damage to two new vehicles in Atchison County the past week. The first involved a brand new 1972 Ford pickup, which had only been driven 49 miles before the mishap. The second involved a 1972 Dodge Demon, which only had 200 miles on the speedometer.
October 2, 1997
• For the third straight week, it took a perfect score to capture state honors in the Missouri Powerpoints football contest, carried by newspapers statewide. The local winner was Nick Thilges of Auburn, Nebraska, with a total of 128 points.
• Peter Rowan, a top name in bluegrass music for over three decades, will pay a visit to the Brownville Concert Series October 10-12. Rowan was a singer and guitarist with the legendary Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys, stars of the Grand Ole Opry. He formed the band SeaTrain and recorded with The Beatles’ producer George Martin; joined forces with Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead for their live album “Old and In The Way;” and his song “Panama Red” was a hit for New Riders of the Purple Sage.
• In Chats: “Davis Massage will now be offering her therapeutic tender touch at the Possibilities Beauty Shop.”
• Operation Jason, held September 20, saw 14 boats with 40 people fishing, bringing in a total of 325 pounds of fish. A total of $3,000 was made.
• Aardvark Video, owned and operated by Ronda (Haer) Gilbert, has opened for business in the former Little Hobby Shop, 311 Main. Cornerstone Expressions, to be owned and operated by Lynn Hunter, will occupy the empty space left behind by The Logo.
