October 17, 1947
• Sixty members of the Tarkio Chamber of Commerce met Thursday night and voted on the budget plan for different activities. These activities include Tarkiesta, Halloween party, Christmas treats, 4-H exhibits, Ladies’ Night entertainment, contributions to the Boy and Girl Scouts, etc. It is also planned now to have a Fourth of July celebration and a new project plans for a baseball program.
• George Balle is erecting two new homes at the corner of 8th and Walnut streets in Tarkio and the Loyd Terwilliger home on Main at 7th Street is nearing completion.
• Joseph Boyd, seaman second class, U.S. Navy, was a member of the Honor Guard that escorted the first shipment of war dead from Antwerp, Belgium, in late September. The boat left Antwerp for Plymouth, England, and will arrive at the port of New York on or about October 25.
• Fred Martin has purchased from Miss Lois Rankin and sister, Mrs. Paul Bestor, the T. B. (Tom) Rankin farm located four miles east of Tarkio. The farm is a 400 acre tract.
October 19, 1972
• Randy Beggs established a new record for a Tarkio runner at the Benton Invitational Cross Country Meet when he placed 17th in a field of 70 with a time of 10:34.
• Lois Martin, wife of Dr. Alfred Martin of Tarkio, has completed a double portrait oil painting of Gene and Toni Bua, well-known husband and wife team from the TV daytime drama “Love of Life.” Mrs. Melvin Walker of Tarkio is president of the Gene and Toni Bua fan club, answers their fan mail for them, has been to their home, and can contact them for possible singing engagements.
• The appointment of career postal employee Woodrow O. Marrs as Postmaster at Tarkio, Missouri, was effective October 14. He has been Officer-in-Charge of the Tarkio Post Office since Postmaster Carl D. Marti’s retirement June 30, 1972. Marrs, 59, started work as a substitute carrier in the Tarkio Post Office in October 1937.

• Roger and Kenna Levings of Tarkio were named the 1997 Parents of the Year at William Jewel College in Liberty, Missouri. They are the parents of Eric Levings, a senior business administration major, and Kristy Levings, a first year elementary education major.
• Junior and Toni Jones will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, October 26, at an open house. The couple married October 21, 1947, at the Tarkio Presbyterian Church parsonage.
• The Tarkio Chamber of Commerce is planning the Harvest Moon and Halloween festivities.
• David White was crowned 1997 Tarkio High School Fall Homecoming King and Crystal King was crowned Queen.
• The Tarkio High School girls’ golf team won the District 8 Golf Tournament, qualifying for State. Tarkio also had top 10 individual state qualifiers. Ambera Wennihan tied for first place and Jennifer Peregrine placed sixth.
• The Tarkio Avalanche staff received a generous treat October 10 when Julie McEnaney, a seventh grader at Tarkio R-I and member of the Soaring Eagles 4-H Club of Westboro, provided them with banana nut bread she made. She used soy flour – donated from the Missouri Soybean Association as a promotion – to make the bread. Julie’s mother, Carolyn McEnaney, made peach jam to go with the bread. Carolyn used peaches from her fruit tree to make the jam.
