October 24, 1947

• Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Rash and twin daughters and a son moved last week to the Ramsay home place at the west edge of Rock Port. The place is one of the most attractive in Rock Port and L.D. Ramsay always called it “Greenway Court Beyond the City.” He had a halftone picture of the residence which he used on his office stationery, with the cutline.

• Emil Tiemeyer’s sale of Poland Chinas on October 10 realized a total of $9,020 for the 67 head sold. The boars brought an average of $160.25 with the top boar selling for $1,700 to Carl Hirsch of Indianola, Iowa. The gilts averaged $86 with the top gilt selling for $280 to Walter Busse of Oakland, Iowa.

• Not even the most optimistic fan would have guessed that Hinderliter’s 1947 Blue Jays could do such a neat and decisive job of manhandling the Tarkio Indians as they did in their 27 to 6 victory Friday night in Tarkio. When the game ended and the crowd started back to Rock Port, the highway was a solid procession of cars, bumper to bumper.

• Gordon Clifton, who operates a furniture store in Hamburg, has been building the initial elements of a country home on the bluffs about a mile south of the Missouri-Iowa state line. It has progressed far enough that his family can move to the basement part of the building this week.

October 19, 1972

• Dr. Edward Bare, 48, of Tarkio totaled his 1969 Corvette in a one-vehicle accident October 13 at 5:30 p.m. while on an emergency run to the Fairfax hospital. Doctor Bare, who was unhurt in the accident, got out of his vehicle and caught a ride to the hospital with a passerby to take care of the emergency.

• Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Jones have moved to Rock Port where Dennis has joined his father, Les Jones, in business at the Jones and Son Lumber Yard.

• Mrs. Mary McEnaney, native of the Westboro community, celebrated her 101st birthday with her family Saturday, October 14. Mrs. McEnaney enjoyed the birthday celebration very much. She is the mother of five children and has 23 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren, and 56 great-great-grandchildren.

• A new look is being given to the property on the corner of Opp and Nebraska streets. The property, purchased by the Methodist Church a year and a half ago, was designated to be used as parking facilities for the church.

• An Emporia, Kansas, man became the 8th traffic fatality in Atchison County this year when his auto collided with a tractor semi-trailer October 12 on U.S. 136 one mile east of the Brownville Bridge. The driver of the tractor-trailer drove off the road and over-corrected, traveling back onto the roadway, crossing the center line and colliding almost head on with the oncoming auto.

October 16, 1997

• Rock Port High School Career Day was held October 8 at the school. Presenters came from Atchison County businesses, as well as Peru State College, Northwest Missouri State College and Vocational School, EQ School Cosmetology, the nuclear plant, and several other places.

• There will be a dedication ceremony of the newly constructed bridge on County Road #275. The bridge will be named “The Shamrock Ranch Bridge.” The old bridge had been built in 1930 and was for single-lane traffic only. It was only 14 feet wide and 60 feet long. The new bridge is 70 feet long and a full 22 1/2 feet wide.

• Brooke Ireland was named queen and Ryan Meyerkorth was named king of the 1997 Rock Port Fall Homecoming.
