October 24, 1947

• Before some 1,100 football fans, Westboro High School met and was defeated by the Fairfax Bulldogs 26-13 in Westboro Thursday evening, October 16. The clash determined who was to take over the lead in the 275 Conference as each had two victories and no defeats.

• DeSpain and Frederick of Kansas City will open the new Modern Photograph Studio in Tarkio next Friday, October 31, in the Harvey Building, the first door east of the First National Bank on Main. F. M. Ward is manager of the studio and he will be assisted by William “Bill” Williams.

• C. C. Poe, who has been in the jewelry repair business here since 1943, has sold his equipment to Harold Wilson and John Mauzey, Maryville jewelers, who will open a shop at the same location. Wilson and Mauzey, who operate Wilson’s Time and Gift Shop in Maryville, expect to carry a complete line of jewelry as well as conduct a repair business.

October 26, 1972

• Westboro Boy Scout Troop 72 held a two night campout recently in the timber along Tarkio Creek at the Iowa state line. Advancement projects in outdoor cooking, axemanship, mapping, hiking, lashing and identification of trees and plants were completed.

• The temperature rose to 55 degrees on the 21st after an unseasonable low of 13 degrees on the 19th. Total precipitation was 1.88 inches for the week, according to Lester Morton, local official weather observer.

• Friends and neighbors gathered last Thursday to harvest the crops of the late Enos Ballinger near Westboro. Lunch was served to 66 men at the Westboro Fire Station.

• The Spanish II class made and enjoyed a menu of food from several different countries. The food included paella (chicken, shrimp, clams, vegetables, and spices), arroz con pollo (rice with chicken), enchiladas, tacos, papas rellena (potatoes filled with chicken, ham, and vegetables), arroz verde (green rice), guacamole salad (avocado), and un plato de fruta y queso (a cheese and fruit plate).

• Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Hanna have returned from a European tour. They visited relatives in Holland and France and toured Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and England.

• Neighbors and friends of Phillip and Meta Hull of Westboro harvested 120 acres of soybeans Monday afternoon, October 20. In the middle of last week, Phillip had a heart attack and was unable to harvest his crops. Nine combines, seven trucks, 12 wagons, 13 tractors, and 50 people all worked together to complete the soybean harvest in a short time. The women of St. John’s Lutheran Church provided lunch at noon for the harvest crew.

• The Northwest Missouri Learning Center of Tarkio recently completed a handicap accessible entrance ramp to Niedermeyer Park in Tarkio. Parshall Concrete donated the skid loader to remove the concrete sidewalk for construction of the ramp to the shelter house.

• The Tarkio Junior High Alert students rewrote “Twas the Night Before Christmas” to go along with the junior high football game against Rock Port October 16. The students built a large, plastic bubble which the elementary classes crawled into to watch a story projected on the side of the bubble. Students involved were Jace Champlin, Bobbi Gratton, Cody Johnson, Emily Salmond, Nicole Salmond, Tyler Sickman, Danny Tubbs, and Ashley Alsup.
