• Services were held last Friday for W. L. Hackett, 89, whose death occurred last Wednesday night, December 3, a few days following a fall suffered the preceding Sunday in his room above the Tarkio Electric Company on Main Street. William Levi Hackett came to Atchison County, Missouri, at age 7 in 1865. Not long after his marriage to Miss Carrie R. Hess in 1883, Mr. and Mrs. Hackett, in the spirit of the true pioneer, moved by covered wagon to Greeley County, Nebraska. Many years later they returned to Atchison County, where Mr. Hackett farmed until the death of his life’s companion.
• There is a great list of Walter Greenes in the Hollywood, California, phone book, but only one Walter Tarkio Greene. The Greenes devised this means of differentiation to enable their Tarkio friends to find them more easily when they are visiting the West Coast.
• J. N. M. Youel of Fairfax has purchased the Murphy Hog Yards and Tarkio Packing Plant as well as all of the packing plant equipment and 12 city lots at a cost of $15,500 from the bankrupt estate of Harry J. Murphy.
December 14, 1972
• Approximately 250 elementary and middle school students were privileged to hear the Hollander string quintet of the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra November 30 in the Tarkio Elementary Gym.
• The home of Dean Farley was first place winner in the home decorations contest sponsored by the Tarkio Chamber of Commerce. Second place was the residence of Mrs. Ruth Dragoo and the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Painter was third.
• An open house was held Saturday, December 9, at the Farmers and Valley Bank in honor of Capt. and Mrs. George Mason and infant daughter, Frances, who are visiting here with Mrs. Mason’s parents. The Masons recently arrived from Thailand and after visiting Tarkio will go to Germany to live for a time.
• Mary and Herb Koch were among the Missouri Farm Bureau members enjoying a Hawaiian tour before flying back to Los Angeles December 10 to attend the American Farm Bureau Federation’s national convention.

• IBP, Inc., the hog buying station north of Tarkio, will close its doors Friday, December 12. Jack Caufield of Tarkio has worked at the hog buying operation for 37 years. It was first Heinold Hog Market for which he worked 28 years before it was purchased by IBP, Inc.
• The Tarkio Elementary third through sixth grade students had the opportunity to be television stars. They helped film Elf greetings for the upcoming Tarkio Chamber of Commerce Elf Auction.
• Santa visited the Espey Veterinary Clinic in Tarkio December 4 and lots of pets had their pictures taken with him.
• The Tarkio Business and Professional Women’s Club met Tuesday, November 11, at the Tarkio Water Company in Tarkio for a covered dish dinner. Sixteen plates of fruit and cookies were made and delivered to local senior citizens.
• Chris Yates, age 26, of Tarkio traveled to Colorado Springs, Colorado, November 29 to compete in Sport Karate International Open Karate World Championships. He won second in Forms and seventh in Sparring in the 18-34 year-old men’s intermediate division.
