• Mrs. Jerry Davis and Mrs. Roy Wilson have sold the Donut Shop to Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Minshal of Falls City, Nebraska. The new owners took possession of the business Wednesday morning of this week. The Donut Shop was established several weeks ago and has been doing a nice business.

• Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Browning returned Tuesday night of last week from Chicago, where Mr. Browning had attended the Farm Bureau National Convention. While there, Mrs. Browning enjoyed a visit with her sister, Mrs. Sallie Ballou, of Pulaski, Kentucky, who was visiting a son in Chicago at the time. It was the first time the sisters had seen each other since 1932.

• On New Year’s Day, the legion will hold a blue rock shoot starting at 10 o’clock in the morning and will continue as long as there are those daring to try their shooting skill. The Legion boys have gone to considerable expense to provide traps, rocks, and ammunition and on the 4-State Roundup grounds, they have a fine field for this interesting sport.

January 4, 1973

• Lynnette Hargus, 18, daughter of Mrs. Oren Hargus of Fairfax, has enlisted in the Navy’s 180-day program through the recruiting station in Nebraska City, Nebraska. She is a 1972 graduate of Fairfax High School. Lynnette was sworn in at Omaha, Nebraska, and will report for duty February 2. Lynnette enlisted under the Navy’s occupational specialty school guarantee program, which allows her to chose the field of her choice – administrative specialties – and attend a Navy class “A” school upon completion of recruit training.

• Newly elected officers in Atchison County were sworn in Tuesday morning at the courthouse. Taking the oath of office from Don Husing, county clerk, were: Hal Davis, new judge from the south district; Paul Seymour, sheriff; Fred Daugherty, judge from the north district; and Gene Moe, surveyor. Bernard Gorman, prosecuting attorney, was unavailable for a picture and Richard Halliday does not take his oath of office until September.

• Mr. and Mrs. Bob Brandon have arrived in Mound City to make their home in a new mobile home there. They will be purchasing stock and equipment for the new hardware store they will open there soon.

• “Miss New Year 1973” at the Fairfax Community Hospital is Holly Michel Whittington, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Whittington of Fairfax. Holly is the first child for the young couple.

January 1, 1998

• A Christmas Wish List: “I want plastic teeth and the Statue of Liberty.” Spencer Barnes, kindergarten; “A car phone. That’s all.” Melinda Bradfield, junior; and “A blonde about 5’6”.” Mr. Wells, band teacher.

• The new additions at the school are finished and the teachers have begun to move into them. The third, fourth, and sixth grades have moved into the new addition and Mrs. Sparks has moved into a new Title One room. “We have a lot of additional space and the students enjoy the carpets for story time,” Mrs. Sparks added. “I enjoy my new marker board and the room is so bright and clean. It’s wonderful!”

• Harry and Marie Emrick will observe their 60th wedding anniversary Thursday, January 1. They were married on that date in 1938. He retired from the Exchange Bank of Fairfax after 50 years of service.

• The Fairfax Forum is now 106 years old. There have been lots of changes in those years, from hand set type to computer and from hand printing presses to no press at all.
