January 16, 1948
• Married on January 11, 1898, Mr. and Mrs. Bartholomew observed their golden wedding anniversary last Sunday with an open house at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gratz Bartholomew.
• A fire, which presumably started from a trash fire at the rear of the building of P.W. Holliway’s recreation and hatchery building Monday morning, caused considerable damage. The Caton truck lines had a few tires and a little popcorn stored in the building and the local telephone company had some cement stored there. The interior of the pool hall was badly smoked up. A fuel oil tank which was surrounded by flames held fast and there was no explosion from the oil.
• In a single-ring ceremony which was performed Saturday, January 10, in Kansas City, Miss Winnifred King of England and Willard Grebe were united in marriage. Miss King recently arrived from London and she states that she likes the friendly people of the states very much.
January 11, 1973
• Rock Port’s volunteer firemen fought a house fire in sub-zero weather January 7 at the Peggy Peters home on North Kansas Street. The house and contents, as well as two family pets, were lost to the blaze. The family was away at the time of the fire.
• The Columbia College Double Sextet, a vocal touring group, will perform January 18 at Rock Port High School.
• Mr. and Mrs. Henry Copeland, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Heyen, Mrs. Hardin Cox, and Charles B. Cox, Rock Port, and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Gorman and Harry Broermann, Tarkio, were in Jefferson City, Missouri, Monday for the inauguration of Gov. Christopher Bond. They also visited Rep. Hardin Cox and several of the couples attended the Governor’s Ball that evening at the capitol.
January 8, 1998
• Rachel Young, daughter of Greg and Debbie Young of Rock Port, was named the first place winner in a statewide pumpkin contest sponsored by the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri. Her entry measured in at 69 inches in diameter. She received $50 for her efforts and her picture appeared in “The Garden Forum.”
• “Wilbur Visits The Farm” was produced by former Rock Port resident Jill (Wanamaker) Luedtke, along with two of her friends. The 30 minute video is one of a series of three tapes the San Diego mothers have produced for the “diaper set,” children ages one to four. The tapes have had national distribution and have been featured on “Dr. John” and local and national television.
• Farmers Elevator Company of Hopkins, Mo Valley Agri-Services of Atchison County, and Farmers Supply Company in Burlington Junction were featured in a recent issue of Country Spirit magazine. In the story entitled “Everyone Wins with On-The-Spot,” the publication features people who are doing something special in their community and these companies are an important part of their communities.
• The Rock Port Diner held a ribbon cutting ceremony on January 5 at its new location, 401 1/2 S. Main, Rock Port (formerly Breadeaux Pizza). Owner-operator Deanna Riebesell decided to move her business from the Rock Port Sale Barn and has made renovations. Decorations include a hand-painted mural by Sharon Logan of Maitland, Missouri.
