January 30, 1948

• The entire William C. Creed family ended up in the hospital at the same time this past week. Week before last, Sammy, small son of Mr. and Mrs. Creed, underwent an operation at the hospital in Maryville. While at the hospital visiting, Mrs. Creed was taken ill and her newborn, Kay Frances, arrived. While the wife and children were hospitalized, the father came down with the flu and was also hospitalized. All are now home.

• First Lieutenant Henry L. Morgan, former student of Irish Grove High School, recently copiloted a C-54 Air Force flight over all airways and air communications service outpost stations in the North Atlantic. On this trip, Morgan dropped parachute bundles containing Christmas gifts and necessary victuals for a holiday feast to the isolated American Air Force troops stationed in the northern most outposts, including Bluie West 8 and Cruncher Island, Greenland, Padloping Island and River Clyde in Baffin land, all of which lie above the Arctic Circle.

• John Richards American Legion Post No. 284 voted to erect a club room on the 4-State Roundup grounds and has purchased a WAC mess hall that was formerly in use at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

February 1, 1973

• Fellowship was exercised on a grand scale at Tuesday’s luncheon when Kiwanians initiated a unique stunt, whereby every member was asked to bring a guest. With clubbers numbering slightly more than 40 and with almost total participation, this meant attendance was around 80.

• Dr. and Mrs. N. L. Cleveland have studiously searched published lists of POWs and those reported lost in action in the Vietnam conflict since 1965 when their friend, Col. Gene Pemberton of Cameron, was reported missing in action. Monday, their search ended when his name appeared in a list of men killed.

• Hunter’s Hy-Klas grocery store is celebrating its 60th anniversary this weekend. The business, which was founded by B. P. Hunter in February 1913, has been operated by his son, James K., for several years. Opening as a general store, the dry goods division was later moved to separate quarters many years ago, and finally sold to Mrs. Thiesfeld.

• Four juvenile suspects were apprehended Tuesday night in the Pearce Gift & Hobby store by Deputy Marshal Floyd Simpson, who was stationed in the store. The suspects implicated others in a series of robberies at the store and a quantity of merchandise was recovered.

January 29, 1998

• Members of the Fairfax FHA Chapter hosted a spaghetti supper for their dads on Monday evening, January 19. A game called catchphrase was played with dads competing against their daughters.

• The Fairfax High School Basketball Homecoming festivities were held Friday night. Amber Oswald was crowned queen and Eric Davis was crowned king.

• Over The Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “The President of the United States is in the spotlight. Enough said.” “If you want good fluffy pancakes with plenty of hospitality, better come to the pancake supper at the Christian Church on Ground Hog Day. Way back when, the men of the church butchered a hog, ground it up, and made it into sausage, but times are different. Now, we buy it already to go.”
