The Tarkio R-I Board of Education met January 18, 2023, at Tarkio High School. The meeting was called to order by President Garrett Wood at 7:00 p.m. Board members in attendance included: Jamie Barnett, Heather Olson, Brooke Vette, Chris Yates, Sam Hannah, and Josh Wright. Others in attendance were: board secretary Lanette Hogue; Tarkio High School Principal Nick Kemerling; Tarkio R-I Special Education Director/Tarkio Elementary Principal Kari Taylor; Tarkio R-I Superintendent Carrie Livengood; Tarkio R-I teachers and staff members Shannon Bruns, Deyton Thomson, Markie Sundermann, Dara Whip-ple, Ellie Graves, Jennifer Peregrine, and Brooke Walton; and Tarkio citizens Amy Hurst and Ashlee Driskell.
The board approved the amended agenda and district obligations.
CTA and TAC reports were shared.
Elementary Principal Kari Taylor reported that the elementary had 93% attendance. On December 12, 2022, 29 students in the elementary saw the mobile dentist. The dental team performed 47 restorations. A Next Gen Assembly was held January 17, 2023, for kindergarten-fifth grades. There have been four office referrals so far in the second semester.
High School Principal Nick Kemerling gave his report. The 6th-12th grade attendance was 95.06% (YTD). Both EA boys’ and girls’ basketball teams won the Fairfax Tournament. Faith Anderson signed with Northwest Missouri State University for track. Mrs. Unternahrer started a middle school gamers club after school and has around 25 students attending. Tarkio Junior High Scholar Bowl has a record of 5-1. Mr. Lambertsen took 12 FFA freshmen to the Greenhand Leadership Conference in St. Joseph, Missouri. On January 3, 2023, Tarkio R-I hosted Stewards of Children training for all Atchison County school staff.
Superintendent Carrie Livengood gave a financial report:
Facilities Update – Mrs. Livengood shared a question and answer sheet she created for staff and an explanation on the project that she plans to share with the staff and community.
Board Norms – A representative with MSBA will attend a special board meeting in February prior to the regular February board meeting with the board to establish board norms.
The first reading of the calendar for the 2023-2024 school year was approved.
Heather Olson moved and Chris Yates seconded to approve the baseball contract with the City of Tarkio as presented. The motion carried 6-0-1.
Board members voted to approve the hiring of Amy Hughes as a part-time, evening custodian.
The meeting moved into closed session pursuant to RSMo§ 610.001, Record and Vote at 7:45 p.m.
The meeting moved out of closed session and back into regular session at 9:10 p.m.
Jamie Barnett moved and Chris Yates seconded to extend Carrie Livengood’s superintendent’s contract through the 2023-2024 school year. The motion carried 7-0.
The meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
