Diana (Rolf) Smith, third from left, along with other Mizzou Golden Girls (including, fourth from left, Linda Russell from Craig), were recently inducted into the University of Missouri (MU) Sports Hall of Fame. When Diana (a Rock Port High School graduate) joined the group as a freshman, the girls were with the Marching Mizzou as baton twirlers. They also incorporated some dance in their routines. “In 1957, Charles Emmons, the director of the band, added the sparkle to Marching Mizzou by founding the now-famous Golden Girls, a twirling line of six to eight majorettes and two feature twirlers. The group first danced in 1966, when then-director Dr. Alex Pickard had the girls throw down their batons and do the ‘Charleston.’ In 1970 (the year this photo was taken), the twirling line officially became the gold-sequined, high-kicking dance line that it is today.” Years later, the Golden Girls put away the batons and picked up pom poms to go along with their dance moves. Now, there are over 30 members on the squad. Diana said, “I am so honored to be a part of this wonderfully talented organization. MIZZOU!”
