President of ALA Unit 199

The Allen-Schiffern American Legion Auxiliary Unit 199 met February 13, 2023, with eight members attending, including the newest member, Judy Grundel. President Linda Kaye Payton opened the meeting. Pearl Burns gave the opening prayer and all members recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag followed by reciting the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Barb Hines and approved as read. The financial report was given by Treasurer Sheridan Mires.

The auxiliary received a notice of the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival being held in St. Louis on April 10 – 17. The Tarkio unit will be sending a monetary donation to be used as needed for the veterans attending.

Linda Kaye gave a quick report on how the Cameron Veterans Home Christmas Gift Shop went last December.

Membership was discussed. This is a reminder to members to send their dues to Barb Hines.

The spring rummage sale is set for April 21-22, 2023. Donations will be accepted April 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, and 19, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. No donations will be accepted on April 20 to allow members time to finish unpacking and organizing. There is a shorter collection time so take your donations early! Please do not donate old computers, TVs, or tires. Contact the rummage sale chairperson, KC Hines, at 660-623-9297 if you have any questions.

No high school juniors have shown an interest in attending Girls State.

The auxiliary is still waiting on a date from the schools to hold the annual County Government Day at the Atchison County Courthouse in Rock Port.

The 4th District meeting will be March 4, 2023, in Parnell at their Legion Hall. Let Linda Kaye know if you would like to go.

There was no new business. Pearl said a closing prayer and meeting was adjourned by Linda Kaye.

The next meeting will be Monday, March 13, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. Members need to turn in hours and money spent or donated for the turkey dinner, rummage sales, veterans you have helped and other community services during April 2022 – March 2023. Members are doing more than they get credit for. Reports should be turned in to Sheridan or Linda Kaye.
