February 27, 1948
• Fred E. Burnett, who will graduate from Tarkio College in May, has accepted a position with the General Electric company and will go to Schenectady, New York, around July 1 to begin his duties. He is a major in the department of commerce.
• C. W. Glassel, research director for Dannen Mills, will be in Tarkio to discuss the topic of animal nutrition before the farmers’ evening class.
• Construction has begun on a new 16×40 foot clubhouse for the Tarkio Gun Club, which boasts a membership of 70. The one-story frame building will have a glass front with 15 windows at the north affording a clear view of the club’s two traps on the Leland White farm one mile east of Tarkio on the north side of Highway 4.
• Donald Whited of Tarkio has leased the Standard Oil Station on Main Street and will replace Richard Matheny. Mr. Matheny plans to farm.
• Ted Handke has sold his residence at 1008 College Avenue to Loyd Freeman.
March 1, 1973
• The grand opening for Field’s Golden Village – fashions and shoes for juniors and misses – will be held at 323 Main Street in Tarkio March 3. A drawing for a door prize of one-third off of any purchase will be held.
• The 25th wedding anniversaries of father and son, Charles Martin and Clifton Martin, will be observed March 4. Charles Martin was married to Lula J. Hall, a nurse at Elmo Hospital. Clifton was married to Miss Genevieve Gray, also a nurse at Elmo Hospital. The couples were married in a double wedding ceremony in Maryville, Missouri, on March 4, 1948.
• The Home Economics II Class at Tarkio High School fixed a special treat last Friday. The class experimented with broiling lobster and trying salmon and shrimp. The girls are making an in-depth study of meats and most had never had shrimp or lobster before.
• One hundred and twelve old-style incandescent lights have been replaced and three additional new mercury vapor street lights have been going into place in Tarkio. The new lights provide for almost triple the light.
• The cement structure in the center of the intersection at Third and Main streets in Tarkio went down for the count again early Wednesday morning. The stop sign was struck and knocked down by a Tarkio driver.
• Allen Slemp, a senior at Tarkio High School, is working full-time for Jack Hixson, a local contractor, through Vocational Rehabilitation. Allen has been training as a carpenter in commercial remodeling, private building and remodeling.
February 26, 1998
• Brian Heits finished fourth at State Wrestling in the 275 pound weight class. He wrestled in six matches.
• Mrs. Billie Schneider’s seventh grade social studies class presented “THS News,” which consisted of the students acting as news reporters and presenting a broadcast of local, national, and international news, weather reports, and entertainment, complete with commericals, aerobics, and a cooking show.
• The Mule Barn Theatre Guild voted to sell the Walnut Inn in Tarkio. The Walnut Inn is well over 100 years old and has been a hardware store, restaurant, motel, dinner theatre, lounge, and most recently, a vacant building on Main Street.
