• The Mail carries an advertisement this week for Dr. Ray F. Dull, optometrist, who is now located in St. Joseph. Dull was the director of music at Rock Port Schools several years ago. After he taught college in Chicago, he studied optometry and secured his doctor’s degree.
• S. L. Moorhead, 95, died at his son’s home February 15 in Tigard, Oregon. Mr. Moorhead was once the publisher of the Atchison County Journal. He was associated with The Journal from 1874 to 1881. Besides being publisher of numerous newspapers over the years, he was a member of the Oregon legislature in 1894 and from 1897, he was the chief clerk of the state senate for four terms.
• Some idea of the amount of work involved in the installation of the Rock Port Mutual Telephone Co.’s new switchboard may be gained when it is shown that 40,000 wires have to be soldered in to make the change from the old board.
• Rock Port has a new blacksmith shop in the first building south of the Highway Cafe, just off of Highway No. 275. The shop is being opened by Wm. Nelson of Hamburg.

• Rock Port’s Blue Jay Bowl began a junior bowling league February 16. The league consists of boys and girls from grades 7-12 and they will bowl three games each Saturday.
• The partnership of Mr. and Mrs. William Creed and their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Creed, Fairfax, has been named from Atchison County to receive the Western Missouri State Farm Management Award.
• Darrell L. Jones of Fairfax has been hired as County Engineer, replacing Gene Moe of Rock Port. Moe’s plans are somewhat indefinite, but he plans to open a camping site on his property in the hills northwest of Rock Port.
• Rex E. Husted and his son, Rex Ronald Husted, will hold an open house at Husted Electronics Friday and Saturday at 409 South Main in Rock Port. Husted has a franchise dealership with Admiral. One item at the store is Admiral TV with Cartivision, which lets you take pictures and immediately play back home videotapes with sound on cartridges that can be erased.

• The Northwest All Stars swept to an easy victory in the Special Olympics District Basketball Tournament in Sedalia, Missouri, February 14. The Division II champs now sport a 6-0 record. Team members include James Clark, Frank Nicholson, Chris Knowles, Phil Daken, and Jennifer Brown.
• Richard Aron Burke received a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.
• Rock Port Volunteer Fire Department released their annual report for 1997. The department answered 58 alarms, including seven city and 51 rural alarms. There were 11 vehicle fires, nine structure fires, 30 grass fires, five wrecks, one Phase II, four assists, one rescue, one drowning, and four deaths.
• Lyle Houts of Hamburg, Iowa, became the lucky winner of the Princess Di Beanie Baby February 14. Stoner Drug of Rock Port sponsored the raffle fundraiser for the new multipurpose building at the fairgrounds. A total of $422 was raised from the ticket sales.
