March 12, 1948

• The State Highway Commission has approved the bid of $97,282 on two Atchison County highway projects. These are the connections between the Sheldon Boettner farm home and the intersection west of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in the Farmers City community and the continuation of the oiled highway north from the W.L. Zuck corner to the Iowa state line.

• Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Cooper of Rock Port held a golden wedding anniversary party Sunday in honor of their wedding held March 9, 1898.

• Walter Mercer has bought the Henry Husing residential property east of the Bank of Atchison County and intends to erect a garage on the lot adjoining the house.

• Measurements taken by various persons last Saturday morning showed that Rock Port had 20 inches of snow on the level that day.

• A fire in the apartments upstairs over the Hamburg Reporter newspaper office Monday morning caused extensive damage, not only to the apartment but also the stock of the newspaper.

March 8, 1973

• S-Sgt. Floyd Megli arrived home Monday from Japan where he spent four years on duty with the Air Force. He and his wife and son are on a 30-day leave, before reporting for duty at Offutt Air Force Base.

• Two new beauticians are in town. Paula Bramble has joined the staff at Bev’s Beauty Bar. Ronda Haer has started working at Angie’s Beauty Shop. Both girls graduated from Rock Port High School last year and attended a St. Joseph beauty school.

• The process of tearing down an old house on Market Street by Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Muntz was taking too long and too much labor for the materials gained, so they called in a bulldozer and in a couple of days the lot was ready for their new home. The home demolished was one of the older homes in Rock Port and formerly belonged to the G.E. Walter family.

• J.H. Stoker of Springfield, who sustained multiple injuries in an accident February 15 on U.S. 275, is reportedly getting along fine. He is in intensive care at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha where he will be for several more weeks.

March 5, 1998

• The Rock Port Drama Club held a Pretty Baby Teacher Contest during the week of February 23-27. Nine teachers entered their baby pictures which were put on display. Students, teachers, and staff members cast their votes for the “prettiest baby” and chose Mr. John Hall as the winner.

• First Lutheran’s Cherished Cherubs Christian Child Care Center has been awarded a $375 grant from Aid Association for Lutherans.

• Around 475 people enjoyed carp, catfish, and chicken served by the Atchison County Fair Board  Saturday at the new multipurpose building at the fairgrounds in Rock Port. The cooks did a good job of keeping up with the huge crowd and board members were assisted by 4-H and FFA members in setting up, serving, and taking down.

• Alexander Kerlin, 17, a foreign exchange student from Germany, is in the senior spotlight this week. Following graduation in Rock Port, he will return to Germany for two more years of high school there.
