• Services for Miss Rebecca Isabella McCaleb were held in Tarkio Monday. Miss McCaleb was born in the vicinity of Greenville, Tennessee, and came to the Tarkio area by covered wagon with her parents in 1872. She graduated from Tarkio College and the University of Missouri. She spent more than 25 years teaching in various schools including eight years in the government schools at Sitka, Alaska.

• A bitter temperature of 17 below was recorded March 11. The maximum temperature recorded for the week was 33.3 degrees March 6. Precipitation totaled 12 inches from snow March 5 and 6 and added to last week’s six inches, raised the amount of snow on the ground to 18 inches.

• A demonstration of deep freezers was presented yesterday to a large number of housewives and others of Tarkio by a home economist of the International Harvester company. The demonstration was held in the Bamboo Room of the Walnut Inn and was arranged by Tarkio Truck and Tractor.

• Tuesday night, March 16, is the night for the big style show and dance sponsored by the Tarkio Chamber of Commerce for the purpose of raising funds for Tarkiesta. Showings of new styles will take place at Brown Gymnasium followed by a dance with Lee Barron and orchestra providing the music.

March 15, 1973

• Rocky Evans has built a nice step table as part of the required study in his Wood I class at Tarkio High School. Skills involved in construction of his project included pattern development, design layout, operation of jig saw, table saw, band saw, jointer, and router, sanding with both belt and orbital sanders, use of screws for assembling of parts, making and gluing joints, and application of stain.

• The fourth grade students of Mrs. Mary Smith and Mrs. Madaline Gilliam enjoyed a field trip to St. Joseph March 12. They viewed a moon rock and a trip into the planetarium at Missouri Western College, then toured the Rainbow Bakery, the Pony Express Museum, and the St. Joseph Museum.

• Air Force Captain Donald B. Spoon, grandson of Mrs. Zephyr Spoon of Tarkio, is one of the American prisoners of war returning from the Orient after years of imprisonment by enemy forces. Donald, 31, has been a POW since January of 1967. Captain Spoon’s father, Melvin Spoon, who grew up in Tarkio, said that for two and a half years he didn’t know whether his son was alive, but never gave up believing that he would return home.

• Members of Cub Scout Den #2 in Tarkio visited McCoy Cabinet Shop in Tarkio to learn about different tools and to cut boards to put together birdhouses.

• On Loving Your Neighbor by Elsie Fae Rhoades – “The other day while doing the dishes, I found myself singing an old song, ‘Love Thy Neighbor.’ I began to wonder how often that’s possible. I’m too absentminded to be a good neighbor. A few years ago I noticed a moving truck in front of a neighbor’s house. I called over the fence to welcome them to the neighborhood. To my embarrassment, they were moving out – not in. Some days it just doesn’t pay to be nice!”

• An incredible snow storm hit Tarkio and the surrounding areas on Sunday, March 8, leaving 11 inches of snow. That 11 inches of snow coupled with 40 mph plus winds caused things to come to a standstill in Atchison County. Snow drifts were reported to be 15 to 17 feet tall.
