Tarkio Boy Scout Troop 88 is getting ready to embark on an adventure of a lifetime. Four scouts and four adult leaders are preparing for a trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. The group will be leaving Tarkio on July 13, 2023, and stopping in Canyon City, Colorado, for a day of white water rafting through the Royal Gorge before beginning their 12-day trek a couple of days later.

Their Philmont trek itinerary covers a total of 61 miles, ranging from two to eight miles per day. Activities include exciting highlights such as fly fishing, panning for gold, blacksmithing, rock climbing, rappelling, horseback riding, hiking up Mt. Phillips (elevation 11,736 ft), and hiking back to HQ down the Tooth of Time. The Tooth of Time is a prominent rock formation at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico that serves as a popular hiking and climbing destination for scouts.

The troop has been training hard for several months, honing their hiking and camping skills. The adult leaders have been preparing the necessary equipment and making the necessary arrangements for the trip.

Philmont Scout Ranch is a well-known destination for scouts across the country, covering 214 square miles and including mountains, canyons, forests, and meadows. It was donated to the Boy Scouts of America in 1938 by oil magnate Waite Phillips. Scouts who participate in a Philmont trek have the opportunity to explore the vast wilderness of the ranch while developing leadership, teamwork, and outdoor skills.
