• A youth from Corning, Missouri, who wanted to go from The Ritz into the Hotel Opp lobby shortly before midnight last Saturday evening found his way barred by the latched French doors separating the two businesses. He solved the matter by firing four shots into the lock with a pistol and then calmly walked out of the front door of The Ritz. Action by authorities is awaiting a decision on whether he is going to join the Navy.
• Nickerson’s on Highway No. 275 at the west edge of Rock Port is advertising Maytag washers for $49.50 and up.
• Adolph Hoppe is the new Rock Port City Marshal, replacing Walter Burroughs. Hoppe is an experienced peace officer as he is a former member of the Denison, Iowa, Police Department.
• A Kansas City firm started work Tuesday morning on the job of sandblasting the stonework of the front of the Memorial Building in Rock Port. The Legion contracted for the work, which will cost $1,500.
• Miss Barbara Lee Patterson, commerce teacher at Rock Port High School, married Jack Clements in Maitland March 6. The couple will honeymoon in California.
March 15, 1973
• Blue Jay Corner – “Every year around this time, students begin to run out of pencils, papers, etc. Most students go to their locker and start digging; and what do they find: Eric Chamberlain – a long lost term paper; Jeff Long – Mr. Welsch’s hair; and Becky Shubat – a rotten apple.
• The City of Rock Port received a gift of three old newspapers from Alvin U. Gustin of Dayton, Ohio. They were the Atchison County Journal (dated Dec. 23, 1882), The Missouri Agitator (a Rock Port paper dated Feb. 24, 1886), and The Home Circle, St. Louis (dated Aug. of 1891). The Agitator stated that there is a bear caged in town and it escaped last week scattering the citizens. In the Atchison County Journal – “Teams are crossing the ice on the Missouri River at Brownville.” “The roof is being put on the courthouse.”
• Robert E. Stahlhut of St. Louis will speak at the Bank of Atchison County in Rock Port and a meeting at The Walnut in Tarkio March 23 on behalf of the American Cancer Society. Robert underwent a laryngectomy and left radical neck dissection for a malignant growth on his vocal cords in 1961 and learned to speak by esophageal method.

• Byron and Phyllis (Hamilton) Million will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, March 22, with an open house hosted by their children’s families. The couple was married March 18, 1948, at the First United Methodist Church of Hamburg, Iowa. They are the third generation of Millions to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
• Two family members of the late Isabel McDaniel Stalcup, who grew up in Rock Port and graduated from RPHS, now make and distribute Isabel’s Mustard using Isabel’s delicious homemade recipe. They recently entered the recipe in an International Mustard Contest and won the silver medal, beating huge mustard making firms.
• Relatives of Alma Clodfelter, who are here in Rock Port on vacation from El Salvador and were hoping to see some snow on their trip, got their wish. Ten inches of snow blanketed Rock Port March 9.
• First Lutheran in Rock Port opened its doors to 40 travelers who were stranded by the snow storm Sunday night. The travelers were from Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Maryland.
• Junior and senior high students and members of the Rock Port community gathered at the school March 6 to listen to speaker Karl Rice talk about the dangers of methamphetamine. Rice is a probation and parole officer from Chillicothe, Missouri.
