The Tarkio High School Music Department had a successful day Saturday, April 1, 2023, at District Music Contest at Central High School in St. Joseph, Missouri. Several students came away with top ratings and will be advancing to State Music Contest. They include: Lizzie Schlueter, trumpet solo, gold (state qualifier); Quin Staten, vocal solo, gold (state qualifier); and trumpet trio (Lizzie Schlueter, Quin Staten, and Jozee Eaton, gold (state qualifier).

Other Tarkio musicians and their results include: Gabe Harms, trombone solo, bronze; Jozee Eaton, trumpet solo, silver; Quin Staten, trumpet solo, silver; Abbie Harms, clarinet solo, silver; Brooklyn Wennihan, clarinet solo, bronze; Alyson Wooten, flute solo, developing; Kamryn Brown, tenor sax solo, silver; Cole Anderson, sax solo, bronze; vocal group (Quin Staten, Alex Barnett, Lizzie Schlueter, Faith Anderson, and Addison Noland), silver; Addison Noland, vocal solo, silver; River Dow, percussion mallet solo, silver; and Alex Barnett, vocal solo, silver.

There are now words used to denote placement. What was formerly a I is now a gold and also referred to as exemplary. A II is now silver/outstanding, III is now bronze/satisfactory, IV is now developing, and V is now ineffective.

Music teacher Melody Barnett remarked, “I’m so proud of these kids and their hard work, dedication and desire to improve themselves and the ensembles!”
