April 16, 1948
• The opening event in a series of programs which will reach a climax in Tarkio’s celebration known as “Tarkiesta” will be held in the Community Building in the city park April 22. The Chamber of Commerce will stage a Popcorn Ball with the orchestra of Bob Deckard playing for the dance. During the evening, those attending will vote for a queen who will reign over other events preceding Tarkiesta.
• The Tarkio Packing Company will be holding an open house week, open for the public to see the cutting, preparing and wrapping of meat for the home freezer.
• Tom Horne has purchased the Alex Rankin farm east of Tarkio and has sold his home on North 7th Street to Delbert Britton of Boston, Massachusetts, who is brother to Mrs. Herman Roberts of Tarkio.
• Rev. Father Leo T. Buhman will arrive in Tarkio Saturday to begin his duties as new assistant at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, having been appointed by Bishop C.H. LeBlond of St. Joseph.
April 19, 1973
• Country music superstars Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton will appear in person in Tarkio Monday, April 23, at Schechter Auditorium at Tarkio College.
• First National Teller Tells column: “A new addition to our collection of home artist paintings of local historical places is one done by Rod McGehee of the reputed first house in Tarkio.”
• Fourth grade boys and girls in Tarkio were the recipients of 75 free tulip trees provided by the State Department of Conservation for Arbor Day.
• Bill Pfuderer will be returning for another season at the Mule Barn Theatre. Last year, he played the leading role of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof and also directed the production of 1776. This year, he will be playing the lead role of Arthur in Camelot and Michael in I Do I Do and will be directing Fiorello.
• Harry Wright, president of Wright Motors, Tarkio, has made available to Tarkio College, for the president’s use, a new 1973 LTD Ford.
• Frances Nelson was presented with a certificate and a $200 scholarship for being named Outstanding C.O.E. Student for 1973.
April 16, 1998
• Ronald McDonald will visit Tarkio Elementary April 16 to perform “On the Inside,” a new presentation designed to teach kids about building good character.
• Melody Riggins of Tarkio has been officially installed as Region I FHA President. Melody is a sophomore at Tarkio High School. Local FHA Advisor Cherie Thomas was installed as the Region I Advisor. Region I encompasses 33 schools in northwest and north central Missouri.
• Elsie Fae on “duckpins”: “During the early forties, there was a duckpin alley in what is now the NAPA building. Although I only spent 15 minutes inside, I remember it well. I was a bride of four weeks, stranded in Tarkio (my husband Dusty was on the high seas). My father-in-law took me to Duckpin Alley. I took my turn and the ball bounced high, jumped the next lane, and rolled down the far side. Taking my arm and steering me to the door, my escort said, ‘All right, we’ve done that, now let’s see what else we can find to do.’”
