April 30, 1948
• Professor C. L. Pollock, head of the history department at Tarkio College, has resigned. A world traveler, Prof. Pollock has been abroad many times and has taught in Cairo, Egypt, Havana, Cuba, and in Japan. He spent the Christmas vacation of 1946 in Cuba, last summer he was in Canada, Alaska, and the west, and he was in New England during the last Christmas.
• Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Ross have moved to the Sixth and College street residence formerly occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bolin. The Bolins have moved to the former F.E. Watkins home.
• Services were held for Sunday Ely Lester Yoder. Mr. Yoder, a prominent lumberman, became manager of the J.C. Culbertson lumber yard in Tarkio in 1910. In 1924, he purchased a controlling interest in the yard and continued it under the firm name of his former employer (who died in 1923). This interest and control was maintained until 1945.
• William McNary, who attended college here from 1895 to 1898 while his uncle, Dr. McNary, was pastor of the local United Presbyterian Church, died in early April. McNary Street in Tarkio was named for his family. He was known in his college days as “Hay Bill.”
May 3, 1973
• The Tarkio High School mile relay team took 1st at the 275 Conference Meet and set a new THS record with a time of 3:35.7. Team members include Chad Freeman, John Seymour, Donnie Broermann, and Tom “Weed” Ryan. The THS 880 relay team of Scott Campbell, Donnie Broermann, Chad Freeman, and Lee Slemp also took first place.
• The 1973 organizational meeting of the Tarkio Girls Softball League was held April 30 with 65 interested girls and their parents attending. Joe Ryan is head coach.
• Tarkio R-I has hired two new teachers to begin this fall. Mrs. Judy A. Clark will teach business education and Richard M. Barrett, Jr. will teach vocational agriculture.
• Six high school seniors took part in a five-day workshop at the Tarkio College Computer Center, taught by Dr. John Atkinson. They were presented with a brief but practical view of computer operation.
April 30, 1998
• The 70th annual Missouri FFA Convention was held in Columbia April 16. Tarkio’s FFA Sponsor Dean Hicks was presented with an Honorary State Degree. Tarkio FFA member John Wennihan was announced the Ag Mechanical Technical Systems – Entrepreneurship winner and Brooks Hurst was presented the State Farmer Degree.
• Wayne Smith of Tarkio caught a 44 pound catfish on Sunday, April 19, in the Missouri River. The fish was about 46” long by 10 1/2” wide. It took him about 20 minutes to land the fish.
• Beth Horner and Mitch Jayne will visit Tarkio High School May 4 and share their expertise in history collecting and storytelling. They will explain how to collect the oral histories that exist at home and in the community.
• Native American Day was held April 22 for the fifth grade students at Tarkio Elementary and for Tarkio Academy students. Kiowa Chief Tone-Pah-Hote set up his teepee on the academy campus and spent the day explaining his tribal culture and how to respect the earth and the many gifts we get from the earth. The students were shown dances, tribal regalia, jewelry, and musical instruments.
