Johann Peter Christian Murray, Ed.D., the son of John Thomas Murray and Ruth Gerta (Freund) Murray, was born December 26, 1952, in Schwalbach, Germany. Johann attended Manasquan High School, graduating in 1970. He then received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Glassboro State College, his Master of Arts in Liberal Education-Great Books, from St. John’s College, another Master of Arts in Dance from Brigham Young University, a Bachelor of Arts in Health and Physical Education from Rowan University, and his Doctor of Education from Fielding Graduate University. He was enlisted in the United States Armed Forces.

On December 3, 2012, Johann was united in marriage to Sarah Beth Williams in Las Vegas, Nevada. They made their home in Tarkio, Missouri, and became the parents of four children, Jaina, Micha, Aia, and Jainaia Murray.

Johann had many different accomplishments including owning a dance studio, “Have Dance Will Travel” and publishing a book, Dancing Like a Star. He was also a competitive, professional dancer. In 2003, he was employed by Peru State College, Peru, Nebraska, as a Professor of Physical Education, Health, and Recreation. He was also the head cross country coach, retiring in 2013.

Johann enjoyed many activities including running, dancing, swimming, surfing, westerns, writing, reading, and especially spending time with his children and wife. Family was the most important focus in his life. Johann passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at his home in Tarkio, at the age of 70.

Johann was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include wife, Sarah Murray, Tarkio; children, Jaina, Micha, Aia, and Jainaia Murray, all of Tarkio; brother, Michael Murray, South Carolina; and Sarah’s and Michael’s extended family.

A private family memorial graveside service and inurnment will be held at a later date at Home Cemetery, Tarkio. There is no visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Johann Murray Memorial Fund for the benefit of his young children. Services are under the direction of Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio.
