• An unusually long and active life came to an end June 5 when Mrs. Sallie V. Grebe, 86, passed away. She taught in the schools of Atchison County, served as county superintendent of schools for some years, and at one time was public administrator.
• Mrs. Blanche Jones, who was Atchison County’s first librarian under the present set-up, assuming her duties on November 10, 1946, has quit the position and gone to Worthington, Minnesota, to take up similar work.
• Through the cooperation of the American Legion junior baseball team and the Rock Port town team, baseball enthusiasts will have an opportunity to see the sound motion pictures of the 1947 world series June 17 at the Memorial Building. The picture shows highlights of the series.
• Greenley’s Market advertises the following choice food specials: round steak, 89¢ per pound; homemade sausage, 49¢ per pound; B & M baked beans, 21¢ per tin; tomatoes, 25¢ per pound; and Hershey’s cocoa, 38¢ for a one pound package.
• “In Days of Yore” – June 1898: Rock Port’s ladies’ cornet band will furnish music for the Fourth of July celebration at Mound City.
• A group of Rock Port young folks was taken to St. Joseph Wednesday by William Griffin and Charles Shaw to see the Freedom Train.

• Clay Knierim, Gary Bogenreif, and Kevin Stoner have been chosen to attend Boys State June 16-23 on the campus of Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.
• Rock Port Girl Scouts held an evening retreat at the home of G.S. Polson last week as one of their activities.
• The Watson Alumni Banquet was held May 26 at the Coach House in Rock Port. Those attending from the 50 year class of 1923 were Raymond Leisman, Oscar Landen, Alice McNeal, Tressa Adams, Hallie Case, Edith Addington, Leah Weidman, and Walter Smith.
• Mr. and Mrs. Paul Cochran, owners and operators of Cochran Electric, have purchased the Hedgpeth Heating and Air Conditioning business from Mrs. Thelma Hedgpeth, widow of the late Jimmie Hedgpeth, who had operated the business for 35 years.
• The Atchison County Library has decided to purchase 24 double-faced shelving units at a cost of over $2,400. New shelves will enable the library to bring adult mysteries, western, science fiction, and non-fiction from storage in the back room.
June 4, 1998
• Rock Port Telephone Company will host an open house Tuesday, June 9, to introduce Raymond Henagan, the new manager, and bid farewell to Boyd Spiker, the former manager. Two long-time employees will also be honored: Elmer Davis, who has been with Rock Port Telephone 30 years, and Richard Burke, who has been with the company 25 years.
• Aron Burke, a 1992 graduate of Rock Port High School, graduated from medical school on May 29 and will be heading to the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville-AHEC to continue his residency in family medicine.
• A CT (computed tomography) system was recently installed at Community Hospital Association in Fairfax.
• The top four fifth grade science fair project winners won a free trip to Worlds of Fun in a limousine, compliments of Mr. Cretsinger. The winners were Meghan Carey, Janae Pearce, Reven Herron, and Thomas Herron. Mrs. Joyce Pearce was the chaperone on the trip.
• The Rock Port Market advertised the following specials: boneless rump roast, $1.89 per pound; russet potatoes, $1.29 for a 10 pound bag; salad mix, 89¢; Wishbone salad dressings, 2 for $4; and ice cream, $1.99 for a half gallon.
