June 25, 1948

• A six-week program of supervised play for school aged children of Tarkio began yesterday afternoon under sponsorship of the Tarkio Chamber of Commerce. The C of C is asking for donations of toys, games, croquet sets or money with which the organization may purchase such equipment. Money is also needed to repair the broken teeter totters and other equipment in the park.

• Tarkio is featured in a farm magazine Missouri Ruralist advertisement appearing currently in national business magazines such as Advertising Age.

• J. E. Walker, 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Walker, suffered a broken knee cap in an accident that occurred last Friday afternoon as he was driving a small racer to be entered in the forthcoming Soap Box Derby. As he was driving down the hill on Chestnut Street, he hit a hole in the road and was thrown off and dragged down the hill by the racer.

• If you have a sense of humor you will be delighted to spend an hour with golf’s greatest showman, Paul Hahn. Hahn flies his own twin-engine Piper Aztec to almost all his exhibition sites. He recently flew to 24 countries on four continents, 38,000 miles in just 13 weeks. He will be performing his golf tricks at the Tarkio Golf Course Sunday, July 8.

• Diana Sheets of Tarkio returned home last Wednesday from a girl Scout trip to Maine. Twenty-four girls made this Maine Heritage Trip seeing historical sites along the way. The highlight was a six-day stay on a sailing schooner which started in Camden, Maine, and anchored at a different site every night.

• The 11th annual Tarkio College Institute of Theology which will be held the week of July 22-27 will feature Dr. Bruce W. Thielemann as the evening preacher. Dr. Thielemann, who has been called one of the 10 best speakers in America, will be presenting messages each evening.

• J. H. McCoy, 68, lifelong resident of Tarkio and a New York Life Insurance agent for 45 years, died in his car June 22 having become ill while he and his wife were returning to Tarkio from Hamburg, Iowa.

• New carpeting is being laid at the Flower Mill in Tarkio. The shop is also being painted and a new door was installed leading to the scrapbook headquarters.

• Mother Nature continues to pick on Atchison County. The snowstorm in March was followed by tornadoes in April and now we have flooding in June. A total of 6.63 inches of rain has been received as of Monday, June 22, but the rainfall has varied across the county. There are three families flooded out of their homes and I-29 was closed for two days due to flooded lanes. The rain and flooding also tore a hole in the levee of the Nishnabotna River near Watson.

• The Tarkio Golf Course in Tarkio hosted its annual Fathers Day  tournament Sunday, June 21. Duke and Brock Nuckolls were the winners of the morning division with a 67 and the team of Bennington and Gebhards won the afternoon division with 65.

• Tarkio Academy students helped paint the house at 802 College Street in Tarkio. This is the future location of Lil’ Bits of Heaven Day Care.
