July 2, 1948

• The Forum has been given a clipping for the Shreveport Journal containing a lengthy write-up of the marriage of Lieutenant Colonel Glade Bilby to Miss Faye Castille of Shreveport, Louisiana, on April 3. The Journal disclosed that Col. Bilby is the model used by Milton Caniff in creating Charles C. Charles, the pleasing character in the popular comic strip, “Terry and the Pirates.”

• Two of the best known rodeo personalities in America will serve as judges at the 4-State Roundup in Fairfax July 15-18. From El Reno, Oklahoma, comes Eddie Curtis, former world’s champion steer wrestler and bronc rider. From Red Lodge, Montana, comes Turk Greenough, many times a world’s champion and considered as one of the greatest saddle bronc riders of all time.

• H.O. Stoner, who has operated an electrical supply store the past several weeks in the Glenn McDonald building, has moved the merchandise to his home and will operate his business there.

July 5, 1973

• Fairfax Community Garden Club will conduct a home garden tour July 10. Members will tour six gardens and the last stop will be at Mrs. Esther Seymour’s, where refreshments will be served.

• Mrs. Herman Jones moved last week from her farm home to the residence property she recently purchased from Ed Grush.

• A break-in at Rogers Pharmacy was discovered Friday morning when the store was opened for business. The thieves gained entrance through the rear and took a large quantity of high priced blood pressure medication, insulin, and other items.

• Funeral services for Mrs. Nancy Flanagan will be held Thursday, July 5, at the Baptist Church of Fairfax. She married Mack Flanagan on October 10, 1903, and they had 12 children. For many years, they operated the Dotham store.

• A program on Africa will be presented Sunday, July 8, by Dr. and Mrs. Franklin Gould at the English Grove Presbyterian Church. Dr. and Mrs. Gould spent some time in Africa as missionaries and fraternal workers. Dr. Gould was in Africa more than 15 years as a pastor and educator and Mrs. Gould about five years as a public health nurse.

• Twenty-two teachers and counselors from 12 area high schools received free computer classes from Vatterott College in St. Joseph, Missouri. The Fairfax staff members and others who attended were taught the Netscape/Internet and Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and took part in a Microsoft Office 97 session that included instruction on how to use Windows ’95, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Powerpoint.

• July Yards of the Month chosen by the Xi Lambda Beta Sorority included the following residences: Leon and Marilyn Reed, James and Dana Thompson, Marion and Tonya Oswald, and Jeff and Janice Beggs.

• Burel Hosfeldt of Tarkio received a graduation certificate and gifts to celebrate her being the first graduate of Community Hospital Association’s cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation program.

• Dr. Wallace Carpenter was not only the delivering physician, but also the great-grandfather of newborn Andrew Hunter McNelly, born at Community Hospital Association in Fairfax on July 16.

• Well over 200 people attended a retirement reception for long-time Fairfax Forum publisher Nancy Gaines on June 26. Nancy is retiring after 47 years of working at the Forum. Tammy Sly has been named managing editor of the Forum.
