Troop 88, the local Boy Scout Troop, visited the Tarkio Rotary Club to discuss the upcoming Philmont Scout Ranch expedition. The troop showcased backpacks, equipment, answered questions, and appealed for donations.
Four adults and four scouts – Tim and Isaac Vette, Brandon and Bo Peregrine, Duane and Jacob Lester, and Sam and Teahen Hannah – are planning on making the trip next month. Departing from Tarkio, Missouri, on July 13, they will road trip to Canon City, Colorado, for a full day of rafting through the Royal Gorge. On July 15, the troop arrives at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico, for a 12-day adventure, including 10 days on the trail. Their 61-mile trek promises challenges and breathtaking views.
During the Rotary Club visit, the scouts proudly displayed packed backpacks with some essential gear. Each member addressed the Rotary Club, emphasizing Philmont Scout Ranch’s significance. The troop shared the comprehensive itinerary, starting with camping guidance at Magpie Camp, team building at Murraca Mesa, spar pole climbing, and logging at Crater Lake and Continental Tie and Lumber Co. The journey includes traversing Fowler Pass, Bonito Creek, and Webster Pass to reach Fish Camp, a favored retreat of Waite Phillips. Scouts will enjoy fly-tying lessons, trout fishing, and camp maintenance at the train homestead.
Ascending Mount Phillips, the second highest mountain in Philmont at more than 11,000 foot elevation, scouts engage with Rocky Mountain Fur Company’s fur trappers, showcasing tomahawk throwing. At Sawmill, they reload ammunition and participate in marksmanship. Visiting gold prospectors and miners near Cyphers Mine, scouts try panning for gold and explore historic sites, including Waite Phillips’ Hunting Lodge. The adventure concludes with rock climbing at Cimarroncito, horseback riding at Clarks Fork, and a memorable campfire.
