• Because of the volume of business done at the local post office, Postmaster Alex Rankin has been able to secure for Tarkio free parcel post delivery. Ralph E. Strom of GI Village, substitute carrier, is making the parcel post delivery in a small truck.
• Approximately 45 children will benefit this fall from a kindergarten, which is planned by the Tarkio Board of Education. Next year will be the first time for quite a few years that a kindergarten has been held.
• Nick Gerhardt of St. Joseph, who is attending Tarkio College, will coach football, basketball, and track at Westboro High School beginning this fall.
• Mrs. Myra B. Low left yesterday by plane for Chautauqua, New York, to attend the entire summer session of the Institute of Chautauqua. She is taking courses from New York University and The Juilliard School.
• Tarkio College has hired Harold E. Kamm as coach of intercollegiate sports and Henry P. Magruder as instructor of speech and dramatics at Tarkio College for the coming year.

• The fast growing sport of auto racing is becoming entrenched in Atchison County. Ivol Shipley of Tarkio snagged his first trophy, winning the four lap amateur trophy dash at the new I-29 Speedway east of Nebraska City, Nebraska. Shipley was in a 1964 Pontiac built by BIDL Racing Associations, a partnership consisting of Shipley, Bob Schaefer of Tarkio, Dick Miller of Rock Port, and Larry Niemann of Tarkio.
• Dr. Theodore K. Bundenthal has been appointed Dean of Education of Tarkio College and will assume leadership and oversight of all the educational activities of the college in mid-August.
• The Tony Award winning musical, Applause, opened last night at the Mule Barn Theatre in Tarkio. Kasey Ellis of Tulsa, Oklahoma, plays the leading role of Margo Channing. John M. Kelly of Long Island, New York, plays the leading role of Bill Sampson.

• The Tarkio Community Garden Club has announced the July Yards of the Month: Irene Smith, 311 Poplar St.; Kathryn Wheatley, 505 N. 13th St.; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Caufield, 808 Park St.; Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bennett, 312 Park St.; Mr. and Mrs. John Driskell, 301 Chestnut St.; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Prater, 903 Pine St.; and Niedermeyer Park, 3rd St.
• Tarkio was selected to receive a Community Development Block Grant totaling $459,200 for a new water tower. The current tower holds 80,000 gallons of water and Tarkio uses 240,000 gallons a day, meaning the tower has to re-fill three times a day. The proposed new tower would be a 300,000 gallon tower. The total cost is $561,700, with Tarkio Water Company putting up $100,000 in funds and $2,500 in-kind services.
• Alan Walkup of Tarkio attended a Kansas City Royals MLB game Sunday, July 5. The Royals were playing the Cleveland Indians. During the game, Alan was chosen to be a member of the Royals’ honorary lineup. He was given an autographed baseball and was able to meet Royals player Jeff King.
