• Twice in the past week, the mercury rose as high as 93 degrees. A low of of 51 degrees occurred at 5:30 a.m. July 23.
• Lester Morton is the new commander of the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post #199.
• Sixty-five 4-H leaders, members, and parents met at Emil Tiemeyer’s Wednesday morning, July 21, for the beginning of a two-day 4-H tour. The first day was spent touring the 4-H clubs north of 275 which were the projects of members in the Central, High Creek, Farmers City, Morning Sun, and Blue Ribbon Clubs. The second day, the group met at Eugene McCartney’s southeast of Tarkio and toured the Oak Grove and Daleview Clubs.
• Dr. J. L. McCreight preached at the United Presbyterian Church in Tarkio Sunday. He and his wife both graduated from Tarkio College in the class of 1908.
• Clark Jackson, Tarkio College Class of 1938, is now the assistant to the president and technical director of a large chemical concern, Turco Products, Inc., of Los Angeles, California. Prior to the war, he was a teacher in Assiut, Egypt, and during the war was a laboratory officer at the Mare Island Navy Yard.

• Young people from the churches of Tarkio and Westboro will walk from St. John’s Church to Tarkio following a route of 10 miles long Sunday, August 5. The walk is a “Hunger Walk” project. Money is raised by securing “sponsors” and will go to the Christian Rural Overseas Program to work among the 200,000 homeless and hungry victims of the Managua, Nicaragua, earthquake.
• New flashing red stop lights have been installed at the two four-way stops at Third and Fourth and Main Streets this week, replacing the old “tombstones” which have been in place there for 25 years. The cement pillars will be removed.
• Members of I.B.E.W. 695, the local union of the Light and Power Co., workers and office force and the power company failed to reach an agreement upon expiration of their contract July 31 and the union is now on strike.
• Gayle, Michael, and Jerry Thomas spent July 5-8 with their grandmother, Beatrice Dunfee, while their mother, Betty Thomas, flew to Las Vegas, Nevada, to participate in the Women’s National Bowling Tournament.

• Tabitha Peregrine of Westboro, Missouri, and Taylor Sharp of Mound City, Missouri, were the lucky winners of bicycles at the annual meeting of the Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative on Thursday, July 23. Lyllis Vette was the grand prize winner. Approximately 187 members attended.
• The deck on the bridge on road 501, which is five miles east on Route 46, one mile south on route N and east 3/4 of a mile, has been poured. The bridge will be ready for farmers to use soon.
• J.B. and Dorothy Turner of Tarkio will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on August 10, 1998. They were married on that day in Maryville, Missouri. J.B. and Dorothy lived in Sheridan, Missouri, until they bought a farm in Rock Port, Missouri, in 1945. After they sold their farm, they bought the El Ray Motel in Tarkio. J.B. and Dorothy are now retired and live in Tarkio.
